Be Inspired by an Interior Design Trend in Red

An interior design trend really worth considering in any home is red.

• Red is a gorgeous warm color - it helps any room feel warm and cosy.


• It can be used all over - or just as an accent. - and it combines well with lots of different colors.


• Red is a very bold color - and it will always stand out more than any other color which it is put with. Because it (quite literally) stands out a lot, if you use red to paint an entire room, it will appear smaller, and darker, than it did before. This is not ideal if you have a small room - although it can produce a very dramatic effect - but if you use red in a large, cold-feeling room, it can make it feel warm and cosy.


• Red is a wonderfully vibrant color - and you will find it really breathes life and personality into your room.


• It is not a restful color though. It is not recommended in large quantities for any rooms which you really want to relax (or sleep) in, although red can really ‘cosy up’ cool colors, like bright white or pale blue, to help warm up a large, unfriendly-feeling room.


• It is a great color to use in rooms where you socialise, and especially where you eat. It is stimulating to the appetite (so, perhaps don’t choose red for a dining room if you are trying to lose weight) and a very flattering color for all complexions.


• Red can be included in your home in lots of different ways, and to give lots of different feels.


• A really bright, primary red gives a really modern feel, especially when it is used as a flat expanse of color.


• This interior design trend looks at red in a slightly different way. Here, red is combined with warm neutrals, and used as an accent to draw the attention to beautiful, swirling patterns.


• The whole feel uses interior design that is perhaps ‘traditional’ in the conventional sense (of being inspired by beautiful, intricate, quality items and patterns) but is actually a really hot trend right now.


• To get the look right choose a neutral basis for your red interior design trend. Choose warm neutrals - that means those with a brown tone or base (rather than a cool, grey tone). Deep, rich browns and chocolates, or pale taupes, creams and beiges will all work well. (Don’t mix with a bright white, or this will give a very different vibrant, modern feel).


• If you have a large room, feel free to go for darker neutrals, for a dramatic look - but still be aware that your room will feel a little darker and smaller - although it will seem more warm and cosy!


• Your red of choice for this interior design trend is a sophisticated, deep red. It should have rich burgundy, plum, pink or bluey tones, rather than being a bright, primary or orangey red - which would look far too bright and modern.


• It is a really good idea to make the basis of your decorating scheme a beautifully patterned wallpaper. There are some absolutely gorgeous ones around at the moment. Go for quite a large scale pattern, where red features heavily as a color, either in the background, or in the pattern itself. Large swirling flowers and foliage are a fantastic, right on trend choice, right now.


• If you are splashing out, choose deep red furniture, otherwise, warm neutrals are ideal for all furniture and flooring. You will really make the ‘splash’ with the red accessories.


• A little bit of red really does go a long way. This is actually more true of red than of any other color. So you can afford to choose a few, quality, attractive items. Patterned curtains, chandeliers, lamps, throws, cushions and vases are all totally ideal for inclusion in your scheme. If you can find items with patterns and styles similar to your accent wallpaper, you will really hit the nail on the head. I absolutely love those beautiful, red, chandeliers - and I think they would make a fantastic statement in any room.


• By mixing soft, warm neutrals with a splash and pattern of red, you will achieve a beautifully sophisticated room - warm, welcoming and relaxing - but with that touch of real designer, artistic flair, that will give your room its own personality and individual edge.
