Kitchen bead board

We are going to be painting our kitchen cabinets a cream color, our wall color is a sage green.

We have pine bead board that is unfinished and I am very tired of it.

What color should I paint it? I think I want to go darker than everything else but not sure what to do.

Help!!

Hi Lori

Your new color scheme for your kitchen sounds very nice! Good choice!

...and a great idea to paint existing cabinets, too!

If melamine, make sure you use an appropriate melamine primer on your kitchen cabinets to get a smooth, and long-lasting, chip-free finish!

Whereabouts is your beadboard (wainscotting)? Floor to chair rail height? Or as a splash back to countertops?

It can be useful to mainly use darker colors lower down in your room - and lighter colors higher up - to give a feeling of more space and light

...(unless, of course, you are lucky enough to have very high ceilings, or large spaces, which you are aiming to visually bring closer).

I think good color choices for the beadboard would be:

1) something neutral - a cream, light beige, or mushroom color...

...these light colors with a warm, beige or taupe undertone would be useful if you'd like to add a bit of warmth and slight contrast to the green into your room, while still keeping a calm and natural feel

2) bright white - for a very clean, light and bright feel in your kitchen - good for lightening small or dark spaces - but can feel a bit cold or stark

3) a slight variation on the sage green color you already have - whether this is a shade or 2 lighter, or darker, is up to you

4) mix with teals, turquoises and blues for a bit more vibrancy

5) mix with soft red-violet, mauves and lilacs for a softer and warmer look (but still quite 'dynamic')

Do take care with green - depending on the amounts of other colors (cabinets, flooring - you don't mention what your flooring is to be like? - table, etc) in your room...

...too much green - although a wonderfully calm, relaxing and natural color - can be bland, and to be honest, a bit overwhelming...

...so do try to break it up a bit with other shades or colors (the cream kitchen cabinets will really help with this, in any case!)

Don't forget to try a little out with tester pots first - to see how the color feels in situ in your home.
