Kitchen Cabinet & Flooring Colors

by Val
(South Texas)

My interior design style leans towards rustic/exotic with a lots golds and punches of greens, ambers and burgundies.

We are preparing to remodel our kitchen and have selected a wood cabinet color slightly darker than medium brown. The color is called "Maple Cognac".

The floor color we like is in the same color family but slightly lighter in color.

What are the pros and cons of having such similar palate for the cabinets and flooring?

The kitchen is wide open to a large family room that will have the same color flooring.

Because of that, I'm hoping that the palate won't make the kitchen seem small and closed off.

I'm planning a lighter color on the solid surface countertops and hopefully a glass tile backsplash, or at least one with glass tile accents.

Test it out with a sample board...
by: Charlotte

Hi Val

Your new kitchen plans sound great - and I know you always do a good job mixing those warm, rich, exotic earthy tones together.

I think you are a little worried that using the two quite dark tones together may make the room feel a little dark and oppressive...

..and yes it may have this effect, to some extent - but don't panic just yet - as I still think your choices will work out well...

I think it's a really good idea having the floor between the 2 rooms the same - the space will be neater, unified, and yes, it will feel larger too!

Keeping the floor a little lighter will help to give some definition between cabinets and flooring, which is good!

And having lighter rather than darker tones for the floor will always help the space to feel a little larger.

It is good to use similar color groups/families for choosing colors, as:

-you know the colors will go well together with no uncomfortable jarring

-the room can feel 'neater' (less cluttered), and even larger - by using the same/similar color tones throughout

Some people like the contrast formed by having light and dark together, whereas some people prefer things to be more uniform, simple and neat.

On the whole I don't think your kitchen will feel too overpoweringly dark by using these 2 similar tones, as you say you will be choosing lighter colors for countertops and splashbacks - so getting that contrast between light and dark that will give definition and 'vitality' to your scheme.

And your room sounds quite open in any case (using the same flooring in the adjoining room too will really help with that!)

To be sure in your own mind, get some samples of the materials, paints etc you'd like to use (or photos if samples are not available) and lay them out together on a sample board.

If you lay them out in roughly the positions and proportions that you will see them in the room, it will give you a good impression of how your room might look...

I think this is worth while doing for that little time and effort extra, to avoid making expensive mistakes!

Do let us know how your kitchen makeover turns out - you can show us your before, during and after photos, here...

Hope this information s helpful to you.

Good luck in your kitchen makeover

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
