Kitchen - Copper and Blue

I have dark copper metal base cabinets in my kitchen and a cobalt blue glass collection.

What color do I use on the walls, floor and upper cabinets?

I think I can work with the blue glass and copper.

It has the potential to be awesome or really really awful.

Please help!

We want AWESOME not awful!!!!
by: Charlotte

Hi

You're right, your kitchen does have the potential to be stunning - those sound like some gorgeous cabinets in copper, and you've chosen very well with the cobalt blue.

Orange (copper) and blue are opposite each other on the interior design color wheel, so this means they are 'complementary colors'.

This will give you a very striking and dynamic scheme! This is such a strong partnership though, that you do have to be careful and not 'overdo' it.

The main thing to remember about using an orange and blue color scheme (or any 'opposite' color scheme) is not to use the 2 colors in equal amounts and intensities, or this will create an uncomfortable 'strobe' or visual flicker effect, which can be difficult to live with.

You are better off choosing one of the colors to be your base color, and the other to be the accent color, and use in quantities accordingly.

Say you chose orange to be the accent you could mix with the opposite cobalt blue (as in your glass collection) and then also with some softer and paler tones in the same blue, or mix with blue-greens and blue-violets.

If blue was to be your accent, you could mix with paler copper colors, and/or with red-orange and yellow-orange tones.

You can add other accessories and touches in your striking accent color too.

Using strong and dark colors can be very dramatic, but can sometimes be a little overwhelming used in large amounts, and can make a room feel smaller and darker, while paler colors (and especially blue tones) can make the room feel larger and lighter/brighter.

You can also mix with neutrals: whites, creams, and beiges/taupes would all set off this color scheme nicely.

You might like to find a similar toned wood (to the copper) for cupboards and flooring - a light warm toned beech or pine, or a warm cherry if you want to go a bit darker.

A dramatic dark wood could also look very striking paired with these 2 strong orange/copper and blue elements, but may make the whole room feel much darker.

Your kitchen made me remember a picture on one of my pages, that might give you some ideas - take a look at the photo here - stunning! ...but may be a little dark for regular day time use, if these dark colors aren't your thing!

(Its a very personal thing whether you like a cosy/dark room or a light airy room!)

An interior design color wheel can really help make sense of these color choices - find out more about color wheels, and where you can get one, here...

Hope some of these ideas help.

Best wishes

Charlotte

Mosaic tiles
by: Pauline

Maybe mosaic tiles between the lower cabinets and the top ones would look eye-catching - if you are able to match up the colours of the copper cabinets and the glassware.

Well worth spending time in the library to find some great mosaic tile patterns.

You will need additional colours too, maybe to match floor, walls and upper cabinets?.

Great idea!
by: Charlotte

Thanks Pauline

Some great ideas! Mosaic tiles would look great I'm sure - we have some glass mosaic tiles with a glitter effect in our kitchen (in a lime green) - I think that sort of thing would look great in the right color.

You could go for a single color in a striking rust, turqouise or blue - or mix together several blue/blue-green/blue-violet colors, or several different oranges, depending on the look you want to go for.

Thanks for sharing Pauline :)

Morroccan Inspiration
by: Pauline

...Sounds very 'moroccan' to me, so any of the colors associated with a 'moroccan' style design would fit.

Turquoise is a good colour to blend in, and maybe a 'terracotta' that does not clash with the 'copper' colour.

Again, mosaics play a large part in the Moroccan interior (and exterior) design modes.

Picture example
by: Pauline

I just wanted to show you this 'mosaic' example with, to show that a lot of colours can be incorporated in such a design.

If you think you may like to do some sort of mosaic pattern, you may be able to get oddments of tiles from the stores at much lower prices than to purchase a full box or set of each colour chosen.

Hope this helps
