Kitchen Cupboards Faux Paint Wood Grain Effect

by Sally Hunter
(Hampshire, UK)

We have a rather vibrant kitchen with burnt orange walls, blue cupboard fronts and orange and blue wall tiles.

Sally's kitchen cupboard makeover

Funds are tight so I'm keen to redecorate as cheaply as possible but not lose all of the colour, just lighten things up a bit.

I completed the first stage of the revamp last week using a 'paint and grain' effect on the cupboard doors.

To maintain some of the blue, I skipped painting with the base coat but gave the doors a light sanding before applying the coat to be grained.

The graining tool took a while to get used to but the paint wiped off easy so I could start again.

Had the doors been a more natural colour I dare say the grain effect would look more wood-like but we're pleased with the outcome and it has lightened the kitchen.

Next stage will be the walls ... its a work in progress!

Great Grain! Love your new look!
by: Charlotte

Hi Sally

Thank you very much for sharing your great faux painting effects - a very effective way to make a big change for kitchen cupboards, without spending a fortune!

I've not used this before, but it looks an interesting product!

Looks like you soon got the hang of it, and did a good job! Well done!

And so nice to create your own unusual color scheme, to suit your own kitchen style - very creative!

Wood grain faux paint kits are available to create a real-wood-like finish on materials that aren't wood, or have a painted finish over them already...

You can get all different wood finishes, from maples, beech, pine, oak mahogany - or white finishes for a more 'painted' effect...

...or you can put it straight over the top of a different color, like Sally has done, for an unusual, and still colorful, effect.

You normally use a base coat, wait for that to dry, then with a different color, create the grain, with specialist wood graining tools, to create the wood grain pattern.

There's quite a bit of skill involved, so you'll probably want a practice first! Looks like Sally's got the knack though!

You can then use a clear varnish on top, which will help protect all your hard work from knocks and scrapes, particularly in a busy home environment, like the kitchen.

A great way of making over kitchen cupboards, on a budget.

Love your new look Sally, and can't wait to see further developments in your kitchen!

Well done!

Good luck with the rest of your kitchen makeover

Best wishes

Beach style
by: Katy P.

Hi Sally

Love your new look - I think you should go for a beach effect with that wood graining - looks like driftwood!

Great Idea!
by: Charlotte

Great Idea Katy - thanks for sharing it!

This kind of wood-grain, sea-worn look is very good, like you say, for a beach-style.

If Sally wanted to go for this look, and as she wants to lighten her kitchen a bit too, she could go for those seaside, muted tones of sun-bleached and sea-worn wood.

The wood graining on the cupboards is a great start, as it helps it look like sun-bleached blue wood.

Sally could also paint over her tiles in a cream, beige or taupe color (using a specialist tile paint), and then bring in soft coastal, muted blues, grays and soft sand taupes, creams and beiges - for walls and accessories.

The pale colors would certainly help to lighten the look, create a softer, and more relaxed feel, and a more spacious feel in the kitchen too.

More about beach decorating styles, here...

More about kitchen makeovers, here...

Thanks for sharing your idea Katy - I think it would make a great look for Sally's kitchen, if she likes it too.

Fancy it Sally? Or do you have other plans in mind?

Best wishes

I like it!
by: Anonymous

Ooh thank you so much for your comments! And what a brilliant idea ... I really like the beach suggestion. You're right, it does look sun bleached doesn't it, hadn't occurred to me until then.

We were given a charming beach hut salt and pepper set at Christmas which is perhaps prophetic of the scheme to choose! I took a photograph of a row of coloured beach huts on a local beach which would also lend itself rather well too.

I see a plan coming together ... thanks everso ladies!

I love it when a plan comes together!
by: Charlotte

Excellent plan! That's lucky! They should go really well with that new look!

Sounds like it's all coming together!

Good luck with the new beach-effect makeover. Thanks to Katy for the suggestion :)

Let us know how you get on, or if you have any questions in the meantime...

best wishes
