Lightening up the Living Room

I recently rented a tiny NYC apartment. I currently own a nice dark brown leather small couch with clean lines and an antique persian rug which has rich reds/blues and small patterned.

They are both nice pieces and I hate to get rid of them.

Although I often like dark "library type" rooms, this is my only living space in the apartment and I want it to be light and welcoming and as large looking as possible.

I would also like it to be somewhat feminine.

Any suggestions would be great.

Some thoughts i have (but am not dedicated to) are to get a very small white/off white upholstered slip chair to add brightness.

Also put a rather large mirror on one wall to open the room up.

I have a small glass coffee table so it wouldn't necessarily be overbearing but could also use suggestions on what color wood my other living room furniture should be.

Light and Bright!
by: Charlotte

Hi

Your existing pieces sound great, and I can well understand that you want to work with such lovely pieces - quite aside from the cost of buying new!

To co-ordinate well with the existing warm and rich browns, reds and blues in the sofa and rug, and at the same time to lighten up a small space, I suggest...

- a color scheme around pale blues and beiges/stones, with the accent tones being the richer red/russet and deeper blues.

- can you paint the walls in your apartment? Painting walls in a pale color, and a cool color (blue tones) is a great way to make small spaces appear larger and lighter/brighter - pale blue would be a very good choice in this instance...

...pale beige/stone colors would also work very well - keep them light and they won't overpower the room too much - but it will give a slightly 'cosier' feel than the cool blue (more of that 'library' feel you mention - a light peachy/terracotta could also work here) - you could even go for slightly pinky shades here too, if you wanted to feminise the room with pink

-What sort of floor do you have? Is it pale? Can you change it?/afford to change it? A pale floor or carpet would work well to lighten the space and make it feel larger...

...it would set off your lovely, focal point rug really well too!

-Your glass coffee table is a great choice for a small space - glass is great because it is transparent, so you can see through it to see all the space the room actually has...

...it's also good because it's glossy - so reflects more light around and makes it lighter and brighter, and feel larger.

-Further glass furniture would be a great choice, or mirrored pieces, if these take your fancy?

-Otherwise I would advise keeping furniture pale - the small white, or light coloured (maybe pale blue or a light stone?) chair you mentioned would be a great choice - matching cushions on both sofa and chair can keep the look co-ordinated.

Other furniture could be painted wood - white or cream is a good choice, or you might fancy powder blue or stone?

-As you mention, mirrors are a great choice for bouncing lots of light around the room to make it feel larger and lighter - position opposite windows or behind/opposite a light source for the maximum impact.

-Choosing pale and soft colors will automatically lend a more feminine air to your room, but you can enhance this with the accessories you choose...

...how about some nice white accessories to lighten the mood - some white ceramics? white carved picture or mirror frames?

(Don't forget to tie in with a couple (you don't need much at all in a small space) of choice accessories to tie in the rug colors (not too many to make it too dark though)

-Make sure your lighting is adequate - a nice bright center light (or lights), (a glass chandelier can really reflect a lot of light around), and perhaps some wall lights, and some accent lights to brighten any dark corners.

Think light and bright when thinking about your room - I think you've got the right idea - and you won't go far wrong!

Take a look at ideas for decorating small spaces...

...and decorating dark rooms

Hope that helps!

Good luck with the room makeover/tweaking!
