Lighting on Kitchen and Dining Table

by Mynch
(Australia)

In front of my bench top is my dining table with just a little distance between them.

Is it a good design to have a hanging chandelier over the dining table and at the same time hang a pendant lights on top of the bench top?

A matching set? Or something less 'obtrusive'?
by: Charlotte

Hello Mynch

Is your bench top an island unit? Or against a wall?

If it is against a wall, or with cupboards built over the top, simple downlights built under cupboards or against the wall may be suitable.

If your bench top is an island unit that needs lighting a pendant light may, indeed, be more suitable.

This does, however, raise the problem of being so close to the dining room table with its lighting problems.

A chandelier sounds a good idea, and if you can get a matching 'set' of lighting from the same range, using a pendant light and chandelier so close together may work fine.

Different styles may look a little awkward or cluttered though. To get round this you could perhaps think about:
  • different heights of the lighting

  • matching pendant lights for both

  • could spotlights provide the lighting for the benchtop, or other less 'obtrusive' lighting

Hope some of these ideas can help you out.

Best wishes

Charlotte
