Living room (adjoining dining/kitchen)

by Des
(Waterford, Ireland)

Room adjoins dining/kitchen......open plan(ish). Dimensions 20ft x 15ft (living room section.

1) From a technical perspective (location of chimney breast) we are advised that the fireplace would best be located at the narrow end of the room (see attached section of layout plan).

2) From the perspective of creating a focal point to the living space it might be located to the right wall (i.e. backing on to the entrance hall)being the wider.

As regards 1) we are concerned that we might find it difficult to create an easy living space given that the focal point (presuming the fireplace would be such.....could it be otherwise??) would be at the far (narrow) end of the room. That said the location of the chimney from the front external elevation would look better (more discreet).

Option 2) on the other hand would make for the easier creation of the internal layout (we think!)but the chimney would look less comfortable on the outside (more 'in your face').Also, we would like to retain some sort of feature structure between the dining/kitchen and the living space without closing it off.

I hope this gets across our dilemma and any advice would really be appreciated. Thanks:)

P.S. Trying to attach images below but not sure if succeeding!

Fireplace Frustrations...
by: Charlotte

Hi Des

Thanks for your question. I emailed you at the address given about sending on the images, but no reply as yet, so I'll do the best I can without...

I appreciate your dilemmas and concerns, about the position of your fireplace - and you do have several options and courses of action.

Of course, generally, I would say that if you have been given technical advice about the location of the chimney I would go with this. This could have important structural concerns, and cost implications, too.

If you really wanted a fireplace in another location, you could consider a fireplace that doesn't require a chimney - such as an electric fire, or gel fire, to get the effect without the hassle (it could also be easily moved to a new location if you ever changed your mind).

Having said that, I don't think having the fireplace down at the 'narrow' end of the room would be too much of a problem - indeed this would allow you to create a really intimate and cosy seating area around the fire, with the fire as the focal point.

It would also make sure this seating area was naturally separate and 'closed off' from the open plan, or hall area.

You are right, the fireplace is a natural focal point in the room, but it doesn't have to be the only focal point in a room - you can create a second focal point in the room with something else, whether it's a TV (a practical focal point) or a large artwork or mirror, or attractive sideboard.

It's nice to have something nice to catch the eye immediately you walk into a room, and it seems that this is what you are thinking about when you speak about the focal point opposite the entrance hall (have I got this right? I'm slightly unclear!)

Does this need to be a fireplace, or could you work out an arrangement with a sideboard, dresser or artwork to fill this space?

It's a great idea to have a play around with a layout plan - I like to cut pieces of furniture out of pieces of paper, so that they can easily be moved around the plan, to try out different positions, (rather than just sketching them in) as I feel this helps you to think more creatively and with the 'bulks' on the room, rather than just drawn lines.

Have you had a go at this? It's quite simple, especially if you already have a layout plan. Click here to find out how...

I hope this helps - and do feel free to come back and ask again, or email me the pictures if possible.

Best wishes

Charlotte :)
