Living room colors - green and pink

I am renting a house starting next month with seafoam green carpet and my sofa is baby pink leather, what color should I paint walls?

Also, I have two chairs that I am going to reupholster and am looking for fabric colors.

What should be my main colors to use in decorating this room.

I like light and bright spaces.

I am so looking forward to this change.

Lots of options with pink and green...

Hello Terri

Thank you for contacting me, and congratulations on your new home.

Green and pink is an excellent color combination - they are opposite each other on the interior design color wheel, called a 'Complementary' color scheme - which means a vibrant and striking scheme.

As this is such a striking color combination, I would avoid adding any other different colors - pale neutrals will always work well - also keeping the feeling of the living room nice and light, bright and airy.

Or you could work on what is known as the 'split complementary' color scheme - for example you could start with green as the base, and then add to the pink you already have, colors around the pink (on the color wheel) - this would be tones of red, red-orange and red-violet - this needn't be a full-on red, pink is just a light shade of red, so lighter (or deeper) tones of these colors would all work.

You could also do the opposite starting with your plain pink, and add greens, yellow-greens and blue-greens.

Pale colors will keep you room feeling light and airy - and using more greens than pinks/reds would also help with this (greens are cool colors, whereas pinks and reds are warm colors - cool colors help a room feel more spacious, warm colors help it feel more cosy).

Darker and brigher colors, though, are excellent to use as accents: accessories, curtains, cushions, pictures etc - especially in a paler room, to give a focal point, and to give your scheme some depth.

Adding mirrors, extra lighting (think accent lighting) and lots of shiny, glossy surfaces and textures also helps to create a feeling of light and space.
