Living room - pale green and chocolate

Hi: I have no idea how to decorate my living room...

I have a chocolate brown sectional with Pine cathedral ceilings.

I have just purchased a very pale green throw cushions with chocolate brown trim...I would like to know what to paint my walls, what colour of curtains and what colour carpet...

I would like to know if the pale green in the throw cushions should be my wall colour?

Please help...

Thank you

Minty Choc Magic!
by: Charlotte

Hi

Your living room sounds gorgeous - such lovely high ceilings too!

Pale green and chocolate should work well - this is a classic interior design color scheme, and looks stunning. Think mint choc chip!

Green is a very relaxing and soothing color, with hints of nature, which brings an essential calm to the room.

Its association with the deep browns, though, will stop it from becoming too bland, and give it a lively little 'twist'.

I would also mix the pale green and chocolate you already have with other tones of lighter browns (I'm thinking creamy coffee shades)...

...and some deeper minty greens, perhaps as small accents, to give the scheme a minty 'kick' - just to give the pale greens you use that little extra 'edge'.

Even though your room sounds quite large - it certainly sounds like it has nice, high ceilings - I would still keep to a pale tone for walls (unless you are after a very dramatic effect). Pale tones allow maximum reflection of light around the room, so making it feel larger, more spacious and lighter and airier.

The pale green you suggest for walls, sounds an excellent choice - pale green is particularly good and reflecting light around the room.

Try it out with a tester pot to get the exact shade you'd like on your walls. You might want to go even a little paler than your cushions (as paint colors always tend to be a little darker in the finished result).

A slightly deeper shade could give you a more 'cosy' result, if this is what you wanted.

Another alternative could be to try a light coffee shade, as I mentioned, on the walls, for a more neutral look - you'd then add the pale and minty greens in with accents, artwork, cushions etc. Again, take care to not go too dark, to keep the light airy feel in the room.

Continues from above...

I would definitely stay neutral with the carpet - a carpet is a large expense, and you don't want to be changing this too often, so something that can go with a variety of different color schemes is always a good idea.

A dark color flooring will also absorb a lot of light, and make rooms feel darker, so I would recommend a fairly pale shade (if you don't have a lot of muddy feet coming through!). I'm thinking a light (or mid) coffee or beige would work well with this, and future, schemes.

Again, shades of pale green or coffee would work well for curtains - depending on the color you decide to have your walls, and if you'd like your curtains to stand out against, or blend into, the wall...

(Choosing a similar color for curtains and walls helps it look more minimal and spacious, if this is what you want - a different color is a more interesting and striking look)

I've used very dark chocolate brown curtains in the past, and while they undoubtedly worked on a 'color' level, they did tend to feel a bit large and looming in the room - a bit imposing - especially when closed.

If you blend together larger areas of the paler greens and pale coffee colors, and then add accents of minty greens and chocolates, I think you'll be able to create a very stunning scheme.

It's a great color combination, and I think it will work very well for you in your living room.

Good luck with your makeover project. Do come back and tell us how you got on, show us a piccy of your finished room or just ask another question if you need more help.

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
