Living room - purple and red scheme

Hi Charlotte, we spoke via facebook...

Sooo, I uploaded some photos of the way my place is now. I live in a 1920s character home.

Kristen's living room, as it currently is

The main wall, as you sit on the couch you face the dining room

The living room, dining room, and kitchen are all divided by some victorian-esque pillars and a main pillar which is the old chimney.

We have red leather couches, which are hard to work around, but very new so I have to incorporate them.

We get sunshine all day long, but Rupert is very gloomy and rainy, so want it to be bright and lively.

The main issue, I guess, is the couch set, and that whatever I do in one room has to reflect in the other because they are all so connected.

What I was thinking about was:
-silver and grey damask wallpaper along the wall where the big couch is.
-the walls would all be a light grey, maybe one shade darker in the dining room???
-the trim is all white and I'd like to keep it that way...

The trunk that is on its end, and serving as a side table/phone stand would be painted (not sure what colour) and the hinges/metal detail would be painted silver.

I wanted to put in some purple detail, like textured throw cushions, or something...

The table in the dining room is not staying, its being replaced by a dark antique one with highback chairs and fabric seats... so, my thought was that the dining room be grey also, but with dark purple crushed velvet seat cushions.

The shelf above the white chair, in the first photo... I was thinking about getting some silver coloured picture frames and instead of putting in photos, i would frame different patterned wallpaper, in grey, red and purple.

The basket of glass balls... those are my husband's treasures and he wants to display them, so i was thinking a long, short glass vase/bowl and putting them in there, on the shelf.

The boat picture that's there now should go, I guess?

The other issue is the loooooong wall where the big couch is. It's absurdly long, and that one spot to the right of it has always been empty because I cant think of something to go there.

Umm... I think thats about it. I would love to get your expertise on my ideas... I kind of want funky, but sophisticated.

Ok so I did these on powerpoint, it is the only program I really know how to use.. it looks like rubbish, but basically this is what it looks like in my head....

A right royal red and purple palace...
by: Charlotte

Hi Kristen

Thank you so much for sharing your ideas, and your photos of your lovely home.

I love your red sofa - not surprised you snapped it up! I think your new ideas should integrate it into your home wonderfully.

I do think your ideas for a purple and red inspired room are spot on - they should look stunning, and, I think, bring that glamorous, sophisticated but contemporary look to your home.

Purple and red are a very lively and funky color combination, and are sure to turn heads!

I think you've done right to make the basis of your scheme a cooler and calmer gray/silver/white - purple and red can be very intense, so by using them as your accent schemes, you will keep a lovely cool, light and spacious feel to your room, whilst still getting that punch of 'wow' through your furniture and accents.

Good idea, too, to tone your 2 rooms together, but have them flowing slightly differently one into the other, and with the darker tones for the dining room - darker colors look wonderful on rooms used mainly in the evening.

Yes - silver touches will look great - I really like the idea of using a foil (metallic) pattern in wallpapers, so that this shiny silver catches the light and reflects light around the room - added daylight in daytime hours, and some gorgeous shimmering reflections after dark.

And this is also important if you're going to be using a lot of dark colors, like dark woods, and deep, rich purples in your scheme.

Don't worry too much, though, that these will be too dark - as the red is very vibrant - and gives the purple a lovely lift, as do the lighter gray, white and silver touches planned.

You might find the dark wood of your dining table does make the room feel a little darker - but if this bothers you, you can very quickly and easily increase light levels around your room with a light colored (and especially a light reflective/glossy) table cloth.

In terms of the wood in your room, I'd be tempted to concentrate on the darker tones you have planned for your dining set, and rather than include any different light or mid-tones (ie orangey woods), if you wished you could paint these in a white or pale gray, or in a deep black, brown or slate gray.

You don't necessarily need to paint all your wood though! I see you have some lovely pieces already in your room, that will add to your room's individuality, just as they are!

If you didn't want to paint your trunk in a red or purple (although I think either of these would work well) I think the whites and pale or deep grays would be a good option, too...

Yes! Your idea about the silver photo frames with red, purple gray wallpaper in them is an excellent idea - if you're putting these against a light gray wall, maybe just stick to the red and purple patterns as these will stand out the most against the background, and make an impact for you...

...rather than just fade into the background as the gray might do!

Yeah, you probably should get rid of the boat picture though - it probably won't complement your new look - you might find you are able to use it elsewhere in your home though - or keep it in storage for future use?

Your husband's glass ball treasures should fit in well!

I wouldn't worry too much about the blank space on your long wall - far better than being all cramped in - sometimes a little bit of 'breathing space' can be just what a room needs. I can't notice that it looks particularly unbalanced in the photos.

If you'd like your room to feel less 'long', think about concentrating some of your brighter red and purple colors and pieces on the 2 (short) end walls.

Red and purple are strong, warm colors and will make the walls appear to 'advance' (appear to come in slightly) so making the room feel more 'square'.

More about this, here...

You might be able to include maybe some red ribbon stripes sewn onto your existing curtains? Or even a long, low, horizontal photo or mirror, on your other wall, beneath your shelf, would give a suitable 'stripe' effect that would help to 'square off' your room a bit more.

Some lovely purple cushions will definitely liven your sofa up too - it should look great!

You can happily mix patterns - as long as they are similar in color (red/purple) and shape/style/design. The samples you have chosen for your proposals do look like they give just the right kind of 'look' to the room.

Think 'luxury' and think 'texture' too - texture on wall paper - flock or foil, texture on fabrics, chenille, velvet, damask - it all adds to the sensory feel in the room, and the air of luxury and sophistication.

I think you've done a really good job with your ideas and proposals Kristen, well done - I'm sure that your makeover will look wonderful, classy and contemporary, and will reflect your personality beautifully!

I hope my comments have helped you with your final niggles and decisions for your design...

Do come back and ask again if you need more help - and please do return to tell us how you got on, and what the finished room looks like!

You can share your interior design projects here...

Hope it helps, Kristen.

Good luck with your makeover.

Best wishes
