Living Room

by Kathy
(West Kilbride, Ayrshire, Sctland)

Our living room is a large square shape. The ceiling is very low (only around 7 foot).

Two sides of the room have sloped walls incorporating a velux window in each. One of the straight walls has a large patio door /window in the middle of it and the other straight wall is broken in the middle with the door to the hall. To one side of this door is an open fire.

I'm stuck for ideas of how to decorate this room. I have thought about using panelling on the lower wall but worried it would make the ceiling look even lower.

It seems to need some sort of texture to the room so I have also thought about using something like as hessian but I could really do with advice!!!

Can you help?
Thanks
Kathy

How to make a light and airy space
by: Charlotte

Hello Kathy

With a ceiling that low, you really need to make the most of the light and space to make the room feel a little more 'airy' - this can be a challenge....

All your windows will certainly help with this, though, allowing plenty of light into your home.

Cladding on the lower part of the wall only, could well make the ceiling feel even lower, by breaking up the already small 'expanse' into even smaller areas and making the walls look extra short.

Vertical wood panelling or cladding, full height on the walls, can help your walls appear taller though, and make the ceiling, consequently, feel higher.

As a rule, any kind of vertical - tall pictures, wallpaper patterns, full length curtains, wood panels/cladding etc will all help.

Make the ceiling feel higher by painting it a bright white, and using uplighters (rather than downlighters) to keep it nice and light and bright.

Rather than texture, perhaps the wall needs a pattern? Such as a wallpaper? This could be used just as an accent or statement wall. Small patterns tend to work best in rooms with low ceilings - as you get more 'repeats' so tricking the eye into thinking the wall is taller - of course, vertical stripes could also be a very good choice.

Pale colors and cool colors (blue and green tones) can also help your ceiling feel taller.

Check out some more ideas for rooms with low ceilings, here...

I hope some of these ideas can work well in your room, and your ceiling won't feel like it's bearing down on you too much anymore.

Good luck with your decorating

Best wishes

Charlotte :)
