Making a small bedroom very romantic

by Joy
(Lakewood, Ohio, USA)

Hi I have a very small bedroom. The walls are powder blue, my boyfriend loves the color, he says they match my beautiful eyes, his words not mine.

I want to make the room very very romantic. However there are some issues.

First my room is in a partially finished basement, the second issue is my room is right next to the hot water tank and the furnace.

I have a country post bed that my guy loves but that's about it when it comes to romantic.

My night stands are old and worn out and my lamp on one side is way too big and the one on the other side has to be there for me to see in the basement.

Beautiful Blue...
by: Charlotte

Hi Joy

Your room sounds great - and sounds like you've got a lovely, very romantic guy there too.

Keep the powder blue - it is a lovely soft romantic color (and even better if it matches your eyes!) and is an excellent choice for a small or dark room, as it reflects the light round very well.

The country post bed is also a good start - try and keep to that kind of look and feel when choosing new items for your room.

Personally I would try to keep to a blue (and white/cream) color scheme in a small room - simple is best.

This also allows you to add white voiles, nets or lace curtains to your room - for a gentle, billowy, very romantic look.

You can use these at the window, and/or hung at a four poster bed (if your posts are that tall) or perhaps just hung (draping) at the head of the bed, to draw attention to the bed, and to enhance a soft, romantic feel.

New bedding is always a good way to get a fresh feel to a room - and is a very good way of adding an air of romance.

To keep it simple and unfussy, you could go for plain, crisp, white cotton sheets, pillows, covers etc - think classy hotel!

Simple black and white photos on the wall can lend a classy air - for romance choose pictures of roses, romantic scenes of woodland walks or city streets, or glamorous screen sirens, whichever suits your own tastes and personality best.

To keep the feel romantic keep lighting soft and subdued - lamps rather than overhead lighting is ideal - and plenty of scented candles, of course!

If you need a new lamp, I'm thinking silver and blue might look nice with the blue and white.

Have a look at some more ideas for romantic bedroom decorating here... - this draws on the country type theme you already have...

I was also thinking the powder blue might go well with a French romantic and sophisticated theme (which you could easily adapt your bed into by painting it white or cream) - if you fancy this idea, take a look at it here...

Hope some of these ideas help.

Best wishes and good luck with your romantic bedroom makeover.

Joy's Romantic Bedroom
by: Val

Hi, Joy, I love Charlotte's suggestions for your bedroom.

I saw where the hot water heater and furnace were an issue. Are they exposed to the bedroom?

If so, you could suspend an inexpensive curtain rod from the ceiling and either hang inexpensive panels or some inexpensive fabric and create a soft, flowing wall.

If you chose the panels, I would further suggest using the white/cream color scheme. Don't get just one or two, you want a softer more luxurious look. More panels would also provide more visual separation for the equipment behind them.

If you choose the fabric, try to find one that doesn't have a really bold, obvious print unless you want to make that wall a focal wall and backdrop for your bed.

Good luck and post pictures. They are easy to upload thanks to Charlotte.

Screening and Pics
by: Charlotte

Thanks Val for your suggestions - a very good idea!

If the hot water tank and furnace are exposed, you might be able to box it in with some (fire retardant) MDF or panelling - or how about a simple screen?

If the problem is heat, the powder blue color will help the room feel as cool as possible - if it is noise, how about a small, indoor water feature/fountain to disguise the noise a little (very relaxing too)?

If you do have any pictures you'd like to post, you can add them to a separate page here... (finished projects)

...or submit as a new form,

(I can then add them here - just let me know on the form that the photos are to be matched up with this question, if that's what you want to do)

...or, just add a comment here and let me know that you'd like to add a photo, if you include your email in the comment

(it won't appear online, and will only be used to deal with the photos!)

I'll email you back with instructions for emailing the photos to me, and I can add them here.

(Sorry it's so complicated - like Val says it's easy to add photos on the form initially (just upload from your computer)...

...but unfortunately I don't yet have the capabilities for readers to add more images directly to additional comments)

Hope it helps

Thanks to Val for your very helpful suggestions. :o)
