Making the large lounge room work.

by Bon
(Australia)

How would you paint/decorate a large lounge room which has an opening to the kitchen (galley) and also the front door/hall opens onto it.

The lounge was originally a lounge/dining room which is now just a large lounge room.

I would appreciate any help.

Thankyou

Bon

Too large or long and narrow?
by: Charlotte

Hello Bon

If your lounge is long and narrow (as is often the case for former lounge/diners) - especially if you have to leave space for access through, it can be hard for it not to feel like a corridor.

But there are some interior design tricks you can use to help it feel more 'square' and in proportion.

First, be careful how you arrange your furniture - it would seem to be the obvious solution, but try not to line furniture up along the long walls - this will just make it feel like a corridor/waiting room.

Try to set some pieces of furniture at right angles to the long wall, or bring it out into the room a little - even if this means the direct path through the lounge is sent off course a little.

Try making the end walls appear closer by painting then with bright, dark and/or warm colors (reds, orages etc).

You can also use bold patterns, such as a feature wallpaper on these end walls to give this effect.

The long walls, then, should be very plain, and quite pale.

If your problem is not that your room feels like a corridor, just that the room feels too large, cold and spacious, then using warm colors all over (oranges, reds, yellows etc) will really warm it up and make it feel cosier (and smaller).

You can add patterns, and lots of textures too, to make your room feel more tactile and homely. Try a fluffy rug, or a luxurious faux fur, velvet or silk/satin throw and cushions on a sofa.

A focal wall of artwork or wallpaper, perhaps some attention to make the most of any fireplace can also help bring the attention inwards to the room, and not out towards the corners of the room.

Hope this helps you with your lounge makeover

Best wishes

Charlotte
