Mamma Mia inspired interior design in sunroom/conservatory

by Kate
(Berkshire, England)

The sun-room/conservatory is 4mx3m, 1 wall is a beige brick the others are wooden. With a large double door and window in 1 wall, the other wall has two windows in it.

I'd like this room to be a relaxing dining room with a sofa, I really like the idea of a greek theme-inspired by the film 'Mamma Mia', but I just dont know how to put it all together?

Oh Mamma Mia! What a great choice!
by: Charlotte

Hello Kate

Great film - and that sounds an inspired choice for the starting point for your design...

What better than a relaxing and colorful room for entertaining with family and friends - perfect for bringing a bit of that fantastic Greek sunshine into your home - or the suggestion of it at least!

I do love that Mamma Mia house, and have thought, myself, how I'd love a house like that, so I do think you've made a great decision!

I've had a quick re-watch of parts of the film to help me to make some suggestions for you - and I suggest you do the same, with a notebook in hand, just making a note whenever you see a feature you really like...

Wall Colors

The Mamma Mia house interior is largely in a pale blue - a lovely color, but it doesn't always work so well in rainy, cold, England as in sun-drenched Greece...

So here are some color suggestions...

Firstly, I suggest you paint your brick and wooden walls (all one color).

Try some paint colors out with tester pots first, to see what works well for you, with the lighting/daylight in your sun-room (even at night and in the rain) to see which you like best.

Some to try:

-pale blue - as on the film - try 'First Dawn' by Dulux - it's a really nice blue and suits the UK light - take care it doesn't make the room feel too cold, though - (this can be avoided by adding accessories in bright and warm colors)

-pale cream/yellow - this gives a lovely effect of sunshine, making you believe you might be somewhere a bit warmer and sunnier!

-pale terracotta - gives a cozier and warm effect

I would mix whichever you choose from the above with a light turquoise paint for wood-work. I noticed on the film that the woodwork (skirtings, door frames, window frames, doors) are all painted in the same, really lovely, soft turquoise...

So I suggest that this would be a great addition to your look, to really help you to get the Mamma Mia style. It goes well with any of the colors I mentioned (each with a slightly different style) - try some out together, as testers, and see which one you like...

Furniture

Go 'natural' for furniture in the Mamma Mia style. Look for wooden and wicker furniture in relaxed, rustic and vintage styles (nothing too contemporary).

Think about painting your wooden (and wicker) furniture to add a bit more color, and relaxed charm, into your Mamma Mia room - you could paint in any of the colors already mentioned, all of them, or other colors that take your fancy...

You might try deeper and/or paler versions of the blues, turquoise, yellow and terracotta. Cream and off-whites are also a good option.

Fabrics

Using lots of fabrics will really help you to get the Mamma Mia look in your room...

Use as:
  • Curtains

  • Throws

  • Cushions

  • Table-cloth

  • Wall-hangings (you could try large wall-hangings if you didn't want to paint your brick)

Again think natural textures with the fabrics - crisp cottons will suit the look well.

Go for bright colors and patterns for a lively and relaxed look - try Ikea for suitable patterns and styles.

Try net curtains at windows - try a cafe-style curtain, which you see quite a bit in the Mamma Mia house - this is a net curtain which fits on a rod half way up the window...

Or try draped net curtains, gathered and billowing around curtain poles above windows for a similar feel, which would probably suit a conservatory/sunroom much better...

(Don't just hang nets in a traditional style)

Flooring

You don't say what your flooring currently is, but if you wish to change it, go for a wooden floor, or ceramic or terracotta tiles.

A Greek, Indian or Moroccan style rug would also suit.

Accessories

Now's the fun bit, where you can really put your own Mamma Mia stamp on your sunroom - your accessories will make all the difference...

Try to think about your color themes, and choose accessories to go with these, but you don't need to be too 'matchy-matchy' - an eclectic feel and mish-mash of colors and styles will go a long way to give the relaxed feel required...

Don't worry about too much clutter either - the look is relaxed, comfortable, personal and homely - so put all your favorite treasures on display!

Some accessories to look out for...

  • Paintings - choose bright paintings and artwork with a Mediterranean theme - beaches, boats and seascapes in bright, sunshine colors

  • Wall-hangings - fabric wall-hangings in rich colors - you see a lot of russet and terracotta fabrics in the film, also white with red-patterns

  • Throws and Cushions - choose colors and patterns as for wall-hangings, above

  • Table cloth - a good way of getting a relaxed feel, and bringing some Greek-inspired color and pattern into the room

  • Bead curtains - could be a suitable entrance into your sun-room, and/or outside

  • Colorful pottery - Greece and the Mediterranean region are 'famous' for their pottery and earthenware - look out for glazed, colorful dishes, plates and bowls, or unfinished (unpainted and unglazed) 'earthy' pieces

  • Mix with colorful glasses and jugs - again you don't need to be too 'matchy-matchy' - you'll get a genuine relaxed feel if crockery and pottery isn't necessarily a matching set

  • Ceramic tiles - you could try a row of Greek glazed tiles along a wall, windowsill or even table-top, to give a little nod towards Greek, colorful style

  • Shutters would also really help the look, if you wanted to add them.

  • My favorite tip I've left till last, as I think it's the one that will really help you to add the perfect finishing touch to your Mamma Mia interior design style...

Plants - try adding some Mediterranean-style plants to your Mamma Mia room - I'm not sure what plants are typically Greek, but the following plants always conjure up the Mediterranean to me, and I think they'd look great in your Mamma Mia inspired room:

    • Red geraniums (pelargoniums) in terracotta pots - also look out for the ornamental leaved varieties

    • Bougainvillea - the ultimate Mediterranean plant - you could climb it up your sun-room walls for a real taste of out-door living brought inside

    • Citrus trees - lemon and orange - should grow nicely as small trees in pots (terracotta) inside your sun-room

You could also drape fairy lights around the room, for a real party atmosphere - great for evening entertaining - choose white or colored fairy-lights - and go for ones in a simple, bulb style (nothing too fancy!)

Keep your look relaxed, natural, vintage and eclectic and you're sure to get a look you love, and that really brings some of that simple Mamma Mia charm into your home...

Now, what music will you have playing? ;o)

I hope some of these Mamma Mia ideas help you with your interior design. Do come back and ask again if you'd like any more help.

Some of the following pages might also give you some more ideas:

Shabby-chic decorating

Tuscany style Decorating

Spanish interior design

Greek interior design

Eclectic interior design

Vintage interior design

You might be able to pull together some of the ideas and themes to help create your perfect look.

I do hope the ideas help - do come back and let us know how you get on, creating your perfect Mamma Mia sun-room.

Good luck with the makeover - and enjoy the results!

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
