Understanding Mexican Style

Mexican decorating themes show the influences of Central American styles, as well as ancient Aztec and Mayan civilizations.

It is not just popular in Mexico, but all over the world, particularly in the USA, where it was introduced with the Spanish Colonial period.

Mexican interior design is for you if you love colors, and are prepared to make a really bright and bold statement in your home.

It is a very happy, joyful feel and will make your home feel relaxed, welcoming and very friendly...

...as well as bringing to mind that gorgeous, hot climate and fiesta atmosphere.

If you fancy home decorating Mexican style in your home, it is actually really easy to do.

Just follow these simple guidelines:

Walls and Color

  • Bright color is a vital idea behind the Mexican style.

  • mexican interior design

  • A mixture of several different colors is good, and helps you to get the look.
  • Try:

    • blues (dusky or bright)
    • deep red
    • terracottas and ochres
    • yellows
    • browns
    • greens
    • pinks

    Try white as an accent.

  • Try to choose slightly muted or dusky colors (but still quite deep and rich in tone, and definitely not pastels.

Authentic Mexican pigments were always natural, so were muted, rather than bright.

  • As well as bright color on the walls, use plenty of texture, to get a really rustic, Mexican feel.

Use a stucco plaster effect – try a suede effect paint to get the look, or a simple color wash technique.

Flooring

  • Go for a natural, hard flooring for your Mexican inspired home.
  • Limestone, clay tiles or ceramic tiles are ideal for your flooring.

Real Mexican homes might include steps or other features with patterned ceramic tiles...

Consider if there is somewhere you can use a few patterned ceramic tiles in your home...

    Some good places could be:

    • steps or stairs
    • skirting boards or base boards
    • under a window
    • around a fireplace

We will look a bit more at tiles for your Mexican interior design idea, below...

  • Rustic-style wooden floors would give you the Mexican look, without too much hassle
  • Fitted carpets are not really appropriate – but do include plenty of woven rugs, in deep, rich shades and geometric patterns.

Furniture

  • Choose simple, rustic style furniture, to make your Mexican inspired scheme work really well.

  • mexican interior design furniture

  • Choose antique pine, or pine, as your wood of choice – or another mid-tone, warm wood, such as walnut or cherry.
  • Dark iron hardware, such as external hinges, knobs, brackets and pulls, will help to get the look.
  • If you fancy a more colorful look, feel free to paint your furniture in bright, Mexican colors.

Rub the edges and corners down with a little wax first, then paint, and when dry rub back the waxed areas with a cloth, wire brush or a little sandpaper...

You will get a natural, authentically distressed, rustic finish.

  • Consider using all natural materials, such as leather, reeds, rattan and rushes in your furniture.

  • mexican interior design tiles

  • Look out for mosaics, and ceramic tile inlays, for example, on decorative table tops.

Choose bright, Mexican terracottas, blues and accents of white.

Accessories

  • Accessories are a fab place to start or finish your Mexican interior design look.
  • Choose wrought-iron, or wooden lighting, for an authentically rustic feel.

  • mexican interior design blankets

  • Add a warm, traditional touch, with bright, woven, blankets and throws.

Or choose Mexican weavings and wall hangings to decorate your walls.

  • mexican interior design colorful fabrics

  • Authentic, Mexican style pottery is an excellent way of getting the Mexican interior design look – with its vibrant colors, and geometric patterns and designs
