Let the sunshine into your home with home decorating Mexican style. Easy to achieve, warm and welcoming to live with - what are you waiting for?
Mexican interior design is a wonderfully vibrant, exuberant and colourful look – ideal for bringing sunshine and happiness into your home.
Mexican decorating themes show the influences of Central American styles, as well as ancient Aztec and Mayan civilizations. It is not just popular in Mexico, but all over the world, particularly in the USA, where it was introduced with the Spanish Colonial period.
Mexican interior design is for you if you love colors, and are prepared to make a really bright and bold statement in your home. It is a very happy, joyful feel and will make your home feel relaxed, welcoming and very friendly – as well as bringing to mind that gorgeous, hot climate and fiesta atmosphere.
If you fancy home decorating Mexican style in your home, it is actually really easy to do. Just follow these simple guidelines:
Walls and Color
Bright color is a vital idea behind the Mexican style.
A mixture of several different colors is good, and helps you to get the look.
Try blues (dusky or bright), deep red, terracottas and ochres, yellows, browns, greens and pinks. Try white as an accent.
Try to choose slightly muted or dusky colors (but still quite deep and rich in tone, and definitely not pastels. Authentic Mexican pigments were always natural, so were muted, rather than bright.
As well as bright color on the walls, use plenty of texture, to get a really rustic, Mexican feel. Use a stucco plaster effect – try a suede effect paint to get the look, or a simple color wash technique.
Flooring
Go for a natural, hard flooring for your Mexican inspired home.
Limestone, clay tiles or ceramic tiles are ideal for your flooring.
Fitted carpets are not really appropriate – but do include plenty of woven rugs, in deep, rich shades and geometric patterns.
Furniture
Choose simple, rustic style furniture, to make your Mexican inspired scheme work really well.
Choose antique pine, or pine, as your wood of choice – or another mid-tone, warm wood, such as walnut or cherry.
Dark iron hardware, such as external hinges, knobs, brackets and pulls, will help to get the look.
If you fancy a more colourful look, feel free to paint your furniture in bright, Mexican colors. Rub the edges and corners down with a little wax first, then paint, and when dry rub back the waxed areas with a cloth, wire brush or a little sandpaper – you will get a natural, authentically distressed, rustic finish.
Consider using all natural materials, such as leather, reeds, rattan and rushes in your furniture.
Look out for mosaics, and ceramic tile inlays, for example, on decorative table tops. Choose bright, Mexican terracottas, blues and accents of white.
Accessories
Accessories are a fab place to start or finish your Mexican interior design look.
Choose wrought-iron, or wooden lighting, for an authentically rustic feel.
Metalwork and wrought iron is also an ideal material for candlesticks, mirror frames or picture frames too.
Pewter tableware will add to this look. Look out for jugs, dishes and plates, to use or display, on shelves and walls.
Add a warm, traditional touch, with bright, woven, blankets and throws. Or choose Mexican weavings and wall hangings to decorate your walls.
Authentic, Mexican style pottery is an excellent way of getting the Mexican interior design look – with its vibrant colors, and geometric patterns and designs
.
Also look out for bright, Mexican folk art which could become a perfect focal point for your Mexican room.
Bright, woven baskets are a beautiful, practical and colorful addition to your Mexican interior design scheme.
Collect little primitive figurines and traditional masks as ornaments, or go for an ‘Old West’ kind of feel, with old leather saddles and traditional farm implements.
A cactus plant can provide the perfect finishing touch to your Mexican interior design scheme.
I hope you choose a Mexican interior design style. It is a wonderfully vibrant look – full of sunshine and energy. It will bring light, life and color into your home, and a wonderfully welcoming feel.
