Mixed Arches and rectangular doorways

Got a new (125 yr. old) house.

In Dining Room to Living Room and Kitchen to Dining Room I have narrow arches without doors.

My tastes are eclectic, but I am unsure what theme/color scheme to go with.

Also, each room has a traditional rectangular door way as well. I have real plaster walls so changing from rectang. to arch is hard/expensive.

I feel a Mediterranean pull here, but love Asian.

Colors are similar, but not same.

Any ideas how to go?

I am unsure how to decorate with arches having never had them.

Mix and match style fun!

Hi Gib/Carol

Congratulations on your house move - your new home sounds lovely.

Firstly, I wouldn't worry too much about the mix of archways and rectangular doorways - these probably won't be a focal point for your rooms in any case - and you can always visually square off the corners with a stencilled design, such as below...

I've done a quick sketch to show you what I mean...

(Sorry it's not very neat or clear, but I hope it shows what I mean)

I think either a Mediterranean or an Asian feel would look great - as you like an eclectic feel perhaps you can mix and match the two together carefully and go for an 'ethnic' look.

Or have you considered a Moroccan look? Moroccan style is a very attractive mix of different influences, including Spanish, Arabic, French and Moorish.

I would steer clear of doing one room individually Mediterranean, one room individually Moroccan, one room individually Asian, etc... unless you are after an obviously themed look - although of course you may get a better scheme by having similar influences loosely grouped together.

As you have archways between the different rooms, you should consider them as a divided whole and try to plan your colors and styles accordingly.

If you like a simple, light feel a rich cream would be a good base for any of the styles, or if you like color a deep yellow-gold could work for all too.

Decorative wrought iron is a good look for all styles - and pieces can mix very well together.

Simple, chunky, dark wood or oak is a common theme for all styles too and can work well with any look.

I would definitely say don't follow any one design too closely - mix and match between styles as the fancy takes you - but do aim for a cohesive whole by careful attention to a unifying color scheme and accents, and thinking about bringing in accessories and furnishings with similar colors, shapes and themes, so that it all works well together.
