Mixing Indian and minimalist styles

by Pralay
(kolkata, WB, India)

Hi, I'm from (Kolkata) India, a southern hemisphere country. The climate here is very much hot & wet. The night is more desirable than day during 9 months of a year. Average humidity is 40% through the year.

India is very much colorful. We are habituated of using all the colors in our daily life.

But now I want to go for a minimalist style of interior design. A large use of white, black & grey. But I'm fearing that very soon I'll feel monotonous with this combination.

So I want to create a fusion of using colors (Indian Style) with minimalist style.

One solution I've already achieved is using colored lighting, but that can't be general or task lighting, that only can be accent or mood lighting & only for night.

What will be in daytime? & what will be the mood lighting fixture - that also I don't know.

Please help me.

Colorful, Minimal....
by: Charlotte

Hello Pralay

You're ideas for your fusion of styles sounds great - very inspired!

Minimalist design doesn't have to be all neutrals - you can definitely inject some real 'oomph' with colors into a minimalist style...

You can choose accent colors - any color will go! Common choices for a modern minimalist style are usually bold, strong, bright colors - bright red, fushchia pink, bright yellow, lime green, teal blue, turquoise, orange....

...or you could paint the walls in a solid, bright color (any of the above) and use the bright white in accents and furniture to get that fresh, clean, modern feel.

Accents can include furniture, curtains, cushions, rugs, pictures etc etc... even an accent wall (or walls)...

You could even go for a multi-colored effect if you choose - a good way of keeping this modern is to create distinct squares (or other shapes) of color with a strong black outline - perhaps on a white wall?

You could play about with this idea and have overlapping and interweaving shapes in different colors too, if this idea took your fancy.

Your idea with the lighting is a very clever one - and should give a great effect...

...although lighting, of course, does have greater impact at night, it can still be used during the day as mood lighting...

....little colored lights in dark corners will brighten things up, and create a colorful glow...

...or colored, translucent shades (of glass or acrylic) can also create that colored glow feel - this can also be used for the main lighting in the room.

Even colored glass accessories, such as bottles or vases could be used - displayed perhaps with a back light to give a lovely colorful effect and glow during day time - the light will pass through the glass wonderfully and give a lovely colorful feel.

Keep the display modern with a streamlined, ordered feel to the way you arrange such accessories.

Hope some of these ideas help.

Good luck with your makeover - I would love to see pictures - You can share your finished project, here...

Best wishes

Charlotte

Fusion Of Styles
by: Pauline Finch-Lea

When you talk of 'minamilist' ideas, this does not relate particularly to the colours of a room, but that a room appears to have very little in the way of furnishings.

Modern designers are producing furniture etc which sits quietly in place and does not 'stand-out' in appearance, plus the idea is to have as little furniture in a room as possible.

Charlotte's colouring suggestions are 'brilliant' - choose your favourite colour for the main 'base', and add other colours to enhance and decorate it.

Use fabrics maybe with some metallic 'gold' threads running through them as throws, cushion covers and voile-type fabric for curtains.

Cupboards, drawers etc with magnetic closure is good for minimalism, so there are no handles to be seen.

If you are able to look in 'Japanese' interior design books, they usually are the most minimalistic room designers in the world!

Great Ideas!
by: Charlotte

Thanks Pauline - some excellent suggestions - and some really good points.

Minimal rooms can indeed be full of color - it is the style you need to watch out for - a minimal, modern style is simple, sleek and streamlined, so do try to keep these pointers in mind when choosing pieces for your room.

Great idea Pauline about the gold thread - a simple, contemporary stripe of gold could keep the traditional Indian feel, but with a sophisiticated contemporary twist.

Nice suggestion too about the Japanese influence - a classic and very minimal look, but still with the cultural Asian influence you are keen to keep.

Pralay, you may well be able to emulate something like this in your Indian, minimal room, using your own choice of Indian colors, themes and styles, in a simple, minimalist way.

Artwork is a great way to bring in cultural icons and emblems to get that authentic Indian influence in your room - perhaps large scale canvases, or even stencils on the walls, for a really modern style?

Good luck with your project - hope these extra great ideas from Pauline help too
