Need help in choosing a coordinated color combination for my hall and kitchen cum dining room

Hi, I am moving to a new house. The walls are cream in color.

I would like to use yellow-orange-red (any two or all three of these colors) combination for the hall and kitchen cum dining room.

Need your help in deciding the best color combination.

- what color/pattern of curtains to choose?

- what color for the sofa and dining table chairs?
(wood will mostly be teak wood finish)

- what color/kind of accessories

The look i would like to achieve is warm, cozy and relaxing.

Appreciate all the help i can get.

Thanks a ton.

Cozy Color Scheme
by: Charlotte

Hi

Yellow, red and orange all go well together - so this is a good color combination to choose - they are all next to each other on the color wheel, so this is called a 'harmonious' color scheme...

These are all 'warm' colors so you should get a 'warm' feel to your scheme, but be careful not to choose bright versions of the colors, or you won't get a very relaxing room, it will be too stimulating.

Muted, mid-tones would work much better for this type of feel - think russets, rusts, terracottas, golds, apricots, rather than pillar box red, canary yellow or tangerine orange!

Deep russets and terracottas are always a good color for dining areas, these help stimulate the appetite, and conversation, and deep, rich colors are a really good choice for rooms used in the evenings.

If your dining area and kitchen are as one, a dark color all over might make the kitchen feel somewhat dark to be practical, but a dark wall adjacent to the dining area could give the dining area a separate and more intimate feel (without affecting the kitchen) if this is what you wanted.

Yellows and golds are very good colors for hallways - as they have a 'welcoming' feel.

All these colors should go well with the teak wood you mention.

It depends on the size of your room, and how 'cozy' you want to make your home feel, as to how dark you should go on walls - pale versions of all colors will give a much lighter and more spacious feel to your rooms, but you will lose a little of the coziness at the same time.

Are you leaving your walls as cream? Or do you want to paint them?

Cream is a good basis for any scheme, and you can add a focal wall in a certain color of paint, or wallpaper, to bring a stronger sense of color into your home, if you prefer.

When trying out with tester pots, do bear in mind that the finished room will likely appear a couple of shades darker than the small patch you tried out, so choose accordingly.

Do you want each room to feel like it's a separate room? Or to treat the whole space as one?

Continues from above...

As far as choosing what color goes where - do you want the overall feel to be dark? You could choose dark walls with lighter accents, such as curtains and accessories...

Or you could choose lighter walls (maybe the cream, or a light gold) with darker curtains in the deeper rust tones.

Both will give you a sense of contrast from accessories to main room, and make them stand out - or you could go for a more 'blended' version - using similar tones of golds, terracottas, apricots, rusts etc all together - this gives a more 'subtle' look.

On a practical note, sofas and seating upholstery are often more practical in a deeper color.

But expensive items like these are also good chosen in a neutral color, as you would hope they would last you while, and may need to see out several different color schemes - and neutral will give you the most future color options.

For accessories you could choose:
  • artwork

  • curtains and blinds

  • throws

  • cushions

  • tablecloths

  • tea-towels

  • storage jars

  • vases

  • plants and plant-pots

  • wall-art

  • candles

  • place settings

...and I'm sure there are many ideas you can use.

You can choose whichever pattern you like, floral patterns and stripes are always popular and timeless, or you could choose something in an ultra-modern, retro or traditional style, depending on your own personal preferences, and the style of your furniture.

Try to keep accent colors and accessories to a lesser amount in the room than your main colors, so that they stand out more.

I hope some of these ideas help - good luck in your house decorating and in your house move.

Do come back and ask again if you need any more help.

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
