Need help in decorating my two bedrooms

Hi,

I am moving to a new house with two bedrooms. Both the room are almost square shape.

The furniture will mostly be teak color. Both rooms have cupboards attached to the wall on one side.

The walls are cream in color.

I need suggestions for the following questions:

- What color/type of curtains to choose?
- what color bedspreads?
- what other accessories to choose?

For the master bedroom, I want the color theme to be blue (my favorite). For the other bedroom trying to decide between purple or green shades.

I want the final outcome to be calming and relaxing. Trying to achieve a contemporary look.

Appreciate all the help i can get.

Thanks a ton.

Bedroom Colors and Accessories
by: Charlotte

Hello

I think you've got some very good ideas for your bedrooms already - all the colors you mention are very calming and relaxing, and suitable for a bedroom.

Blues can give a very cool and calming feel - but if you feel it's too cold you might want to add some warmer colors - some touches of golds, or even teals, turquoises or greens could work, or the teak furniture you have could do this too...

Purple is a very good color for bedrooms, it promotes deep relaxation and sleep, and you can go for a deep, sultry feel with darker purples and berry shades, or pale lilacs, which would give a much lighter, and more spacious feel.

Green, too is a calming and relaxing color, with quite a natural feel, and is much less 'cold' feeling than the blue, but still gives quite a spacious feel to the room.

Do you want your walls to stay cream? Or are you wanting to paint them?

On the assumption that you are leaving your walls cream, you can introduce these colors through your accessories, and perhaps a feature wall, with paint, or wallpaper in these colors.

Choose curtains which are thickly lined, or blackout curtains, to ensure a dark room for sleeping, or choose blackout blinds with dress curtains over the top.

Continues from above...

You can choose accessories in different shades and tones of the colors you've chosen - choose brighter and deeper shades for the items you want to stand out more and be 'focal points' or 'focal features' in your room - again, assuming you're keeping the walls cream, the brighter and deeper colors will stand out more...

If you want them to stand out less, for a more subtle and 'blended' feel, choose lighter tones and shades - this will give a more streamlined and spacious feel.

It's good to make the bed itself the focal point of a room, so choose striking bedding to dress it finely - a strong, bright or deep shade of your chosen color family will be most noticable in the room, and create the focal point feel.

You can also use bed-heads and wall-hangings or artwork behind the bed, in your chosen colors to emphasise the bed as the focal point, and if you wished to choose a focal wall (for some striking wallpaper, for example,) this would be a good wall to choose.

Other accessories you may want to consider for your bedroom are:

  • Mirror

  • Artwork

  • Rugs

  • Throws

  • Cushions

  • Dressing table set

  • Vases

  • Candles

  • Other ornaments

These can be in your chosen color scheme, and you could also add neutrals, silver and/or gold to add a little interest to your scheme.

Don't forget to look into adding textures and pattern to your scheme to add further depth.

I hope these ideas help you with your decorating scheme.

Thanks and some more doubts...
by: Anonymous

Thanks a ton Charlotte, for the quick and detailed response.
It has helped me come up with a fairly good idea on how i can decorate the rooms.

The walls will stay cream, so i will go with your suggestions for accessories like artwork..

For the bed spread, can i go with different shades of the chosen color or a contrast color like say, brown for blue/purple color bedroom?

Also, how do i know/decide which colors would contrast best?

Looking forward to your response..

Color Contrasts and Combinations...
by: Charlotte

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

As your walls are staying cream, I would be tempted to stay with the shades of blue/purple for the bedspread...

This is because, although the cream is a neutral, it still forms a separate 'color' in your interior design scheme - and good interior design schemes are easiest to get right if you keep them simple - that is, not too many different colors and ideas together...

This said, you can also introduce contrasting colors into your scheme, in your bedspread, and probably in smaller amounts, elsewhere, to add a touch of extra liveliness and interest to your scheme.

Brown, if you wanted to use that, is a neutral, too - so you could quite easily include that in your scheme - blues do tend to look especially good against browns - as it sounds like you have actually already discovered.

In this case I would include a few other brown touches into the room too - your teak furniture may well be enough.

If you wanted to use different shades of blues, this would be a great idea too - you could also include other harmonising or contrasting colors into your scheme.

I have quite a good explanation of creating color schemes, here which discusses how to decide which colors 'go' together.

You will need access to a color wheel to get the most out of this explanation. (Info about color wheels, here...

Basically, for a blue scheme you could also:
-use different shades of blues
-use shades of colors which are either side of blue on the color wheel (blue-greens, turquoises and greens - or - yellow-greens and yellows)
-use colors which are opposite blue on the color wheel - for blue this is orange (this is why warm toned woods and browns work so well with blue)

There are a few more complex options too, which are explained on a color wheel itself, if you were to get one.

For purple you could choose:
-different shades of purples (lilacs, mauves)
-different shades of colors next to purple on the color wheel (blue-violets and blues - or - red-violets, reds and pinks)
-the opposite to purple on the color wheel - which is yellow - a very striking and dynamic scheme!

These 'opposite' colors are the ones which 'contrast' best in your scheme - you can also look at colors either side of the 'opposite' on your color wheel for a nice color 'twist' for example - the opposite of purple is yellow (the 'contrast') you can also look at yellow-oranges or yellow-greens for an alternative contrasting effect.

Please ask if you'd like any further help.

Good luck with your decorating. I hope your bedrooms turn out beautifully.

Best wishes

Charlotte
