Need ideas for bedroom with two windows

by Sammi
(Phoenix, AZ)

Entrance to bedroom

Entrance to bedroom

Entrance to bedroom The spa

We just bought a house and the master bedroom has some very interesting "features":

- The bedroom itself is long and rectangular. The door is at one end the the bed is positioned at the far end in front of a window.

master bedroom

- There are two windows:
* One window is large & square and juts into the room.
* The other window is smaller, rectangular & offset.
* Both windows have formal drapes which will be changed.
* The view from the large window is incredible and we don't want to lose the view by placing the the bed in front of the window.

master bedroom

- The bedroom is connected to a "spa" with a fireplace, jacuzzi tub & walk-in shower.

The Spa

- The fireplace is right next to the bed. A nightstand is between the bed and the fireplace, so it feels crowded.

For me, the only logical place for the king bed is in front of the smaller window. But it looks strange because the window is smaller than the headboard and is offset.

While I have a number of thoughts about what to do, I would really like to hear your ideas

Tricky!
by: Charlotte

Hi Sammi

Your new home looks beautiful, and very spacious!

I think you have a few challenges there to be able to work around, but I'm sure there are plenty of options.

I always find it very useful to use a layout plan in such cases of furniture arrangement dilemmas, as it allows you to really play around with different options in a quick and easy way.

Drawing a layout plan needn't be too complicated - click here to find out more...

There looks like quite a large space close to the entrance of your bedroom, if I'm interpreting your photos correctly...

...could this be used for a bed?

And is that a wardrobe I spy in the corner of one of your photos? Is this fitted or free-standing?

If free-standing that looks like it might be a lovely spot for a bed with a great view out of the window, depending on what is actually on that side of the room, of course, I don't think it's photographed?

If you'd like to keep the bed on the current wall, I think it would look better being positioned centrally, as the balance is really upset as it is at present.

And yes, it does look rather cramped in with the current bedside cabinets - perhaps something narrower? or lower? would suit better.

You do have quite a problem with the small window not being centrally positioned too - if you'd like to keep the bed on that wall, I think your options are:

-to move the bed across to the left (as you look at it, facing, as in the photo) so that the window falls in the center of the bedhead (if this is possible) - you can enhance the window with drapes either side to make it more of a feature.

-think about pulling the bed across so that a second window shaped feature could be positioned next to the window, so that the bed could be positioned centrally to these 2 features (and if these could be positioned so that that center of the gap between the 2 fell down the center of the room that would be even better!)...

...this could be a picture, a mirror, a wall-hanging, even a 'false' curtain or blind - this could be quite a messy solution, depending on it's execution - but it could help that wall feel more balanced...

...a picture or mirror, for example, would not need to replicate the window exactly but just be of a suitable 'balance' to look right

...proportions you might consider are half size, quarter size, or a third

...a curtain feature or blind over both together could also help with the feeling of balance - but my feeling is you would have to be quite careful with this as it could just end up looking a messy jumble! Which you don't want!

(Hope all that piece above is clear!?)

Continues from above comment
by: Charlotte

Continues from above...

It doesn't look like your bed would fit with it's head in the alcove? But could it fit with it's head on this alcove wall, here? The alcove could then perhaps be used for useful over-bed shelving?

Does your fireplace continue to the end of the wall? It's unclear from the photos - if not perhaps the head could fit against this wall, instead?

(...assuming that the bed fits in that spot widthways at all, of course...!)

I hope some of these ideas help.

Do look at drawing out a layout plan, to try out some ideas that might not have occurred to you...

...some of the ideas in my page on furniture arrangement tips may also help...

Good luck with the room re-arranging!

Do let us know what you decide and how you get on.

Best wishes

Charlotte

Thanks, Charlotte, for your reply
by: Anonymous

Charlotte, I really appreciate your immediate response to my challenge. You helped me through this impasse!!

You mentioned that it looked as though the bed was pushed over (to the left). In actuality, the bed is/was centered against the back wall.

Because of the window casement coming into the room it really did appear lopsided. Of course, having the smaller window placed off to the left side didn't help at all.

Your comments prompted a renewed creativity.

I removed the night stand that was next to the fireplace, pushed the bed over, towards the fireplace, rearranged the other nightstand and removed the drapery behind the bed.

I also temporarily put a screen behind the bed until I decide what to do about the window.

The room "feels" much better already!! Thanks.

p.s. I'd attach a picture but cannot do so in the comments sections.

You're Welcome!
by: Charlotte

You're welcome, Sammi! :o)

Glad to have helped - and very pleased that the bedroom is feeling a lot better balanced too!

Unfortunately at the moment you can't add photos to the comment thread - although it would really be useful if it was possible! (The company who do the technical side are working on this, I'm told!)

You can email me though, with your photo, and I can add it on to the comment thread from this end - I've got your email address from your first submission, so look out for an email from me, and you can just reply with the photo as an attachment.

Thanks very much for the update - it's great to know how people get on with the suggestions.

Thanks for sending the photos, Sammi - I actually can't believe what a difference that makes - looking much better - far more 'balanced'!

Now I see how your room opens out into the en-suite too - very nice! :o)

You might be able to get away with using voiles or a more sheer fabric on the screen if lack of daytime light is a problem in there now?

Thanks very much for sending the updated photos - a great difference - I'm so pleased to have been of help!

Best wishes - and do keep us updated on further developments ...or problems!

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
