Organizing Home Office Layout
Choosing Home Office Furniture

Organizing home office layout and choosing the right furniture...

Helpful hints and tips for your home office layout and interior design...

Once you've planned what you need from your home office interior designs (check here...), you'll need to make sure you're organizing home office to include everything you'll need, and to be as comfortable, safe and practical as possible...

...and to create a pleasant and attractive environment to work in is definitely something to aim for too!

And it will make your work much more pleasant!

These home office designs and solutions can be adapted to any location, and any size of space!

Just think it through, and decide what you need, and what's important to you...

When considering organizing your home office layout think about:

Layout and Lighting

  • Natural light is good - a space with a window will give good light (as long as you aren't too tempted to spend all your time gazing out of the window!)
  • Do you like to work with the light behind, in front or to the side of you? Consider glare, reflections or bright windows.

I like working with light to the side of me (usually this is the best for most people). After several years of an understairs office, I'm very much enjoying my window!

  • light from one side is usually best when organizing your home office layout

  • Good artificial light is also important. A ceiling light is essential.

Uplighters are useful, as they reflect lots of light up to the ceiling - so if you have a bright white ceiling, this reflects back down into the room (without glare off the bulb!)

  • You will definitely need a desk lamp. An adjustable lamp, or 'anglepoise' lamp is best. Try out several positions (locations on the desk, and angle) to get the right spot, with:
    • no glare
    • enough light

get the lighting right when organizing your home office layout design

Organizing your Home Office Layout and Furniture

  • Position your desk in relation to any windows (light coming in from the side is usually best, see above)
  • Also think about sockets and power points - perhaps you can bring some more into the right locations?
  • Choose a desk that's plenty large enough (although for light use in small spaces, and extra-small desk may be just what's needed!)

Remember to plan space for printer, phone and paperwork too - not forgetting that all important cup of coffee!!

  • Look out for desks with drawers, or additional storage built in, to save on space. But make sure there's enough room for your legs to stretch out and be comfortable too.
  • For full time workers, consider a second working surface or desk. With a computer on one desk, it's often very handy to have a surface free for paperwork, or additional storage. I definitely think so!
  • Your desk should be between 23-28 inches (58-71cm) high
  • Position your computer monitor and keyboard straight in front of you. Your screen should be at eyelevel when seated, or slightly lower.

  • get furniture that is comfortable and ergonomic for correct pasture when choosing your home office furniture

  • The ideal viewing distance between eyes and screen should be between 16-28 inches (41-71cm). This may vary, depending on individual screensize, eyesight and preferences though, so go with what's comfortable for you.
  • Definitely choose the best work chair you can afford - particularly if you will be working full time in your home office.

    Look for:

    • a high back
    • arm support (make sure these fit in below your desk)
    • adjustable settings
    • nice soft and supportive padding
    • 5 legs for stability
    • castors for easy movement

More info on what to look for as you choose an ergonomic home office chair, here...

The above checklist for your home office chair has been kindly supplied by David of best-office-chair-reviews.net - you can check out his best office chair reviews website for help in finding your own best home office chair...

  • Make sure you've got at least 3ft (1 meter) between the back of your chair, and a wall, or any other furniture, so you've got plenty of space
  • You'll probably also need extra storage - perhaps a filing cabinet, or extra shelving, for organizing home office storage, paperwork, files and bits and pieces?

    • Make sure drawers and cupboards have 3ft (1m) free space in front of them for safe and easy access.
    • Arrange storage so that the items you use most often are within easy reach. Items used less often can be filed away in corners further afield!

More about home office storage solutions, here...

  • Do you need a 'chill out' or rest area in your home office, for a few minutes break from work?

Or will you use other areas of your home..?

I hope some of these ideas for organizing home office layouts will really help...

I've been using them to help me plan my home office expansion into the spare room - and they've been great!
