Oriental Rug - Japanese Decor

by chris
(Florida)

I have an oriental rug in softer red, green, blue gray and black tones.

Can this be used in Japanese decor?

Take inspiration from your rug...
by: Charlotte

Hello Chris

Your oriental rug sounds lovely - what sort of pattern does it have on it? Is it more Chinese than Japanese in style?

If you have a beautiful item like this it is understandable to want to make the most of it and fit it into your new interior design schemes.

As you have quite a selection of colors in your rug, I think you will be able to work with it to achieve the look you want.

Was it something like this Japanese interior decorating look that you had in mind?

This Japanese look is very simple in style, but you could pull out and emphasise the greens, blue-greys and blacks in your rug by using similar and complimentary colors in the room. If your rug is floral in design, include some floral patterns, pictures etc in the rest of the room - orchid designs are very typically Japanese - and particularly looks great mixed with greens and turquoise-blue.

You could also go for a general Oriental or Asian design which encompasses all oriental themes and styles, as they do have much in common and do work well together.

Take a look at the Asian decorating styles, here for more inspiration.

Make sure you try and take inspiration from your rug and use it as a starting point for your new scheme, rather than as an afterthought - to make sure that it will integrate well, and emphasise its beauty as part of the room.

Good luck and hope your lovely oriental rug can happily take pride of place in your new style.

Oriental rug
by: chris

Hi Charlotte!

Thank you very much for your helpful suggestions. The rug is more geometric than floral so for that reason I thought it would blend better with Japanese decor rather than Chinese.

Thanks again!
