Painting to Go Over My Sofa

by Tamra
(United States)

HI,

I am looking at the Monet 'Chemin Dans Les Bles a Pourville' ocean painting for over my sofa.

I have a standard sofa and I want to add two sconces on each side. The wall is 12ft but I do have a corner cabinet on this wall also in the far corner.. I measured and it would work. Some I have found are 44 or 45 x 36".

Now the room is about 16 ft by 17ft but there is a open walk thru area connecting the dining that adds a total of 21 ft.

In this area of the 16ft by 17 I have a LARGE Thomasville armore in the corner, across from my sofa.

My thought is that the larger painting over the sofa would balance this look, rather than a smaller painting or several small ones.

I also have a floral painting that is that is like 24 by 36 that is vertical, so it would also
balance this.

Would you say this is a good route to go with this?

Also I have French country and I do not like the dark paintings of woods and rivers that some show, I like more light and I love this ocean look and the blue, it picks up your spirit.. and also I do not get a lot of light so this has morning light and that helps too.

I know it is a painting of a French ocean side but do you think it would go well.. and the size over a standard sofa. I have a large tapestry right now and it looks nice and balances things .

I thought I wanted a mix of English and French design and maybe a Cottage style with a garden but trying to decorate around that with material for the sofa, if I choose to go with a floral sofa it would not go and be tooo busy so I thought this would help tone that down and add a peaceful nice look.

I also thought to put two black iron sconces on each end.

Any thoughts on this and or suggestions I would so much appreciate.

THANKS

A beautiful view...

Hi Tamra

That is a beautiful painting, so peaceful and serene, and with wonderful colors...

I think this would certainly fit in with a country theme - you can't argue that the painting does show a rural oceanside scene, with grasses, hills and flowers...

The colors are lovely too, and are perfect for a lighter, brighter feel - the blues and greens too are very relaxing.

There are also quite a few choices of color to co-ordinate with other features in your room (or if you were choosing fabrics for your sofa) - you could go with blues, greens, orange/red, yellows, sands, whites and greys - so you have plenty of choice.

A large picture I think will sit well in your room, and will balance the room nicely, over the sofa, and if you wanted to add the wall sconces, I don't think they would look out of place.

The link to the picture I have included above also lets you try out your picture in a variety of different room scenes - there are a few available with sofas in, so have a little play with the tool, and see what you think.

I think if you love this picture, and it gives you that lift to your spirits, that is the most important thing - it is quite rare to find a picture you truly love like this, so I certainly think you should go with it, and allow it to provide a focal point and source of inspiration for your whole look.

I hope that you will be hapy with your new picture and new look in your home. Best wishes with your makeover - it sounds like you've thought it out carefully and it will look great!

Charlotte :o)
