Pink and Brown Bedroom

by Clair
(United Kingdom)

Hi. I came across your site after searching for days for different styles for my bedroom makeover I plan on doing.

When I finally decided on a style, I was searching to find out if the colours I want to do and the furniture I want, would go together.

I have had some great advice from your site but I still need some help and wondered if you knew where I could get it, online preferably as I suffer from chronic pain (which may be fibro) and CFS, so can't really get out.

I wanted to use a rose pink (similar to that in your 1st picture in the bedroom gallery page 1) and a rich brown as I love these colours and thought they would go well together.

I was then looking at getting french rococo style furniture and am unsure as to whether to use cream furniture or dark mahogany, also if I use the dark mahogany furniture, would I get away with using the same style accesories but in cream to lighten it up?

If this would not go with the rose pink and chocolate, which colour would be best? Was thinking about maybe a light pink?

The other things I am having problems with is how to colour my woodwork, would that look ok cream? and what colour carpet to use as I cannot have hardwood flooring in my bedroom.

If there is anyone I can write to that could answer me all these things as I fear I would have to do hours of reading to get this information and my health has taken a bad turn so that amount of reading would probably take me days, maybe even weeks right now!

I hope you dont mind me asking for your advice and apologies for such a long email!

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me,

Kind Regards

Clair

Some ideas...
by: Charlotte

Hello Clair

I am very sorry to hear about your problems with CFS.

Did you read my 'About Me' page or my 'How I Work From Home' page? I have CFS too...

(Although I have improved an enormous amount over the last 12-18 months), so I understand exactly how you feel...

...and your difficulties with too much intensive reading, or getting out and about.

Anyway, onto the interior design matters...

I think your idea for a pink and rich brown room will work very well.

(That photo is one of my very favourites - I would have my room like that if my other half didn't veto pink in 'his' bedroom!! lol!)

So, the pink and the dark brown will look very good together. As to mahogany or cream furniture, both would go, but would give quite different effects.

Mahogany furniture will be quite dark.

This can give quite a sophisticated feel to the room.

The darkness may make the room feel a bit darker, and smaller.

But the room will, at the same time, feel warmer and cosier.

And as a bedroom, with use at night-time and evenings, this feel is usually less of a problem.

Cream furniture will give a much lighter and more feminine feel to your room.

This should help it to feel lighter/brighter and more spacious.

It has a 'fresher' feel than the dark colour.

Mahogany and cream would match together OK. They are both neutrals, so will pretty much go with anything, and each other.

Another colour you might wish to consider instead is a paler brown - kind of a soft taupe.

Different pinks will go with each other.

(If your main pink has blue undertones, try and mix with other pinks with blue undertones, rather than orange undertones, as this could create quite an uncomfortable mix)

Hold the colours up next to each other to see how they look

You can even push towards a very deep (or bright) pink.

Some deeper reds may also work.

There is some more information for you on the next comment (I ran out of space!)

Some more ideas...
by: Charlotte

Continued from the last comment....

With accessories it can be a good idea to look for an 'accent colour' effect.

This is usually a brighter or deeper colour, to stand out more.

(Of course, pale colours such as cream can also stand out well against deep colours, and work just as well)

Your wood work could be painted dark brown or cream, depending on which way you wanted to go with the furniture - keep to the same, I think.

Your carpet could be a nice cream (I think this would work, even if you chose to go with the deep brown for accessories and woodwork, just to lift the room a little).

(Be aware of the practicalities of a pale coloured carpet though!!)

A darker colour, brown or a deep rust or red, would also be good.

But you would have to make sure the colour looked good with the others too.

And also be careful that it didn't make the overall look too dark.

A dark flooring can quickly bring down the light levels and feeling of space in the whole room.

If you did choose a darker carpet, pale coloured rugs can help with this.

It can be quite a good idea for dramatic schemes like this one to keep to a very few colours, to keep the dramatic feel that you get with the pink and brown.

(Try to keep it simple - 2 or 3 colours would be ideal I think).

I hope I haven't given you too much information or too many different options here.

If you go on the Dulux website there is lots of information about colours and you can order colour samples to check out the colours at home.

(I always recommend using a tester pot to see how the colours work in your room at home, and how they make you feel)

You can also ask their colour experts questions about colours too.

Click here for the Dulux website

I also really like the Crown Paint website. Here you can create a 'room' online in the colours and woodwork you choose, to play around with some different ideas.

You can also order free samples and ask them questions too.

I hope that this has given you some good ideas about what to choose in your room.

Please don't overdo it if you decide to do the actual decorating yourself.

I know from experience how much it can take out of you, even just painting a tiny corner!!

Good luck with your decorating decisions. Please ask if I can be of any more help.

I would love to see any photos of your finished project too!

Very best wishes.

I hope your CFS starts to improve soon.

Thank you

Charlotte

Thank you so much for all your help, I have plenty of information to get started with.

I think I am going to go with the dark furniture and dark woodwork and then rose pink walls (I believe it is the dulux georgian range - rose paint).

I think I will then do a cream ceiling rather than white, cream carpet and cream accesories (ie picture frames and other little ornaments) and maybe a few pink accesories too.

I am not too sure of the pinks to use but will take my little bit of card with the wall colour and will match up items to that.

If you like I can send you a picture of the finished work (the painting and carpeting will be done this month but the furniture may come a little later as it is rather pricey so may send a part way done picture and then a fully finished one if you like).

I am doing the same as you and considering doing a course to learn a new skill as I too am too poorly to work right now, I do love decorating so may consider interior decorating.

Thank you so very much for your advice, it really helped.

I am also going to use that dulux room website too, to double check that I am happy with it all.

I will definately be back to your site before decorating other rooms too.

Kind Regards

Clair
