Get writing right...
by: Charlotte

Hi Aishah

The most important thing to think about when designing a room for anyone, is to consider carefully their needs and requirements, and even their wants and likes.

You need to know what the writer needs in their room. Perhaps you can ask them?

I would think:
  • a large table

  • comfortable chair

  • space for a computer - does this need to be separate from an area for writing with paper and pen?

  • printing facilities

  • phone line

  • lamp

For a rest area a writer may like some comfortable chairs and a coffee table, or a sofa.

And plenty of storage is very important - find out how much? and what it will be for? high level? low level? narrow? wide?

Ask the writer how they plan to carry out tasks, and where particular storage is best positioned.

Do they like to work by a window in natural light? Or away from a window so they aren't distracted by the view?

Does the rest area need to be close to, or away from, the writing area and desk?

There are lots of factors that you may need to take in consideration when creating a room for a writer - considering space and function just as much as the purely decorative factors.

Yellow may be a suitable color for a writer's room as it stimulates the intellect and skills in communication and can help creativity.

Blue is a very calming and relaxing color, and also stimulates the intellect and gives clearer thought.

If you are starting a project from scratch, you may like to run through my how to design checklist to help you make a professional job of it.

Good luck with your writer room makeover.

Best wishes

The Write Stuff
by: Charlotte

Hi Aishah

I think you need to look at the personality and style of the writer before making your decision on the style of the room.

Have a look at the style in the rest of the house, is it traditional, modern, colourful, stark?

Does the writer want their private space to be like the rest of the house? Perhaps they feel the rest of the house doesn't reflect their own personality, and wants their own private space to reflect this better and be a space where they can feel more comfortable?

Perhaps the writer is a creative type who will appreciate lots of color? or fun themes and motifs? newspaper cuttings? pages of books pasted to the wall or in a collage? letters, poems, quotations or sayings stencilled onto the wall?

Or perhaps as a work space they would like it simple and functional? Plain and not too distracting?

Perhaps you could take along some interior design magazines and ask the writer to pick out the kind of looks they like for their room, to give you some idea of how to proceed.

Hope this helps.

Good luck with your writer room makeover

Best wishes

Charlotte

My pleasure!
by: Charlotte

My pleasure Aishah!

Ah good, you have the advantage of being able to imagine your ideal writer and creating a room for that person you imagine.

Good luck with your interior design project - I hope you come up with something both practical and spectacular - and gain very good results.

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
