Sage Green Sofas - Interior Design Advice Please

by Kammy
(Carmel, Indiana)

Sofa in question.

Sofa in question.

My husband and I have brand new sage green sofas for our living room. The problem is that my husband is not fond of any shades of brown, what color scheme should I go with then? By the way, he has no imagination when it comes to decorating so it all falls onto my lap. Thank God. lol. But, of course, I want his approval as well. Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and good luck to you as well!!

lots of choices...
by: Charlotte

Hi Kammy

Your new sofa looks great. I know that it can be very difficult to choose a color that you both love - or at least tolerate - but do persevere...! Sometimes I have first choice of color in a room, and sometimes it is my other half (the other one always gets to veto it though!!!)

Anyway - if your husband does not like any shade of brown, I assume that all warm neutrals are out of the picture - beiges, taupes etc.

In that case, I think you do have quite a few color choices which will go with your lovely new sofa, so you can pick which one you think will suit you both and your home the best...

You can go for a simple scheme, just using different tones and shades of green - I would choose a browny/yellowy green (rather than a bluey-green) to match with your sofa best. If you want accents of color, go for a bright, or deep red (as the complementary color this will give a very dramatic effect.)

You could actually choose to decorate the rest of the room in red - this would definitely be a very dramatic look (and may be dark in your room, or make your room feel smaller if you use too much) so if you want to go for the red tones, I think it would be best to stick with softer pink tones, for a more mellow look.

Other colours which I think would look really good with your sofa are yellows and oranges (you can go quite pale, for lemon and peach tones - again for a more subtle feel) If you wanted a third accent color with this scheme a red-violet would look great.

If you wanted a cooler feel to your room (or if it is a small room) you could always try a soft lilac as your main wall color.

I hope these have given you some ideas. Hope you and your hubby can agree on a wonderful scheme.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out

xxx
