Should I paint the brick fireplace?

by Sandra
(Texas)

The brick fireplace is kind of shades of pinkish, off whites and tan colors (same as the outside of the house).

The fireplace has a raised hearth, simple wood mantle above the 42" w. X 30" t. opening and then the brick goes to the ceiling.

The fireplace is pretty much centered on the 26' long wall. The room is 15' wide.

On the long wall, immediately to the left and up against the fireplace is a built-in cabinet with book shelves above. To the right of the fireplace is a bare wall.

I plan to paint the walls latte and paint the built-in cabinet with bookshelves, the crown moulding, the chair rail and the base board antique white.

Should I paint the brick fireplace? Antique white? or what other color? I think I want to paint the fireplace, but I'm not sure it is the right thing to do.

Again, The built-in cabinet/bookcase covers about 1/3 of that wall, the brick fireplace a little less than 1/3 of that wall and the remaining 1/3 of the wall will be painted latte.

The opposite wall space is only about 16' that will be painted latte, the rest of the space on that side is the front entry and on the other end, the opening to the breakfast room.

The two end walls are pretty much all windows, in fact the back wall is mostly windows with a window seat all the way across (which will be antique white). (I hope you are not too thoroughly confused!)

Thank you so much for your suggestion, Sandra

Another thought...?
by: Charlotte

Hello Sandra

We are actually considering a similar 'conundrum' in our lounge - we don't think we want the bricks there brick-colored, but aren't sure we want the commitment of painting them, as I think that once they are painted they are going to pretty much have to stay that way, as the paint will be difficult to get off - even with paint stripper, as our bricks are so very deeply textured.

What we are intending to do at the moment, is to make some MDF panels to fit over the existing fireplace, which we can paint, and which can be removed at a later date if necessary.

As this is still a future project at the moment, we haven't worked out the exact details of the construction, but believe that so long as we are adding these to the exterior of the fireplace only, there should not be any fire risk. You may wish to check this out for yourself though, should you choose this option.

If you do want to go ahead and paint the bricks, I do think the antique white is the best color option.

Hope this has given you some ideas that will be useful.

Good luck with your decorating project, and hope you'll let us see some photos when its finished!

Best wishes

Charlotte

Another alternative!
by: Charlotte

Sandra,

I've just come across this excellent product as an alternative to painting a brick fireplace.

The product helps you actually change the color of your brick, without losing that brick texture by slapping paint on it - for a more professional, contemporary look!

The website has plenty of tips and FAQs, and you should be able to complete the project yourself in a weekend.
