Be influenced by the culture and atmosphere of glorious Spain. Discover how a Spanish decorating style can work in your home...
Make a real statement, with a beautiful, bold and vibrant Spanish style.
A Spanish design style is for you, if you want to make a wonderful, colourful statement in your home.
This Mediterranean interior design style is fresh and vibrant, but brings to mind beautiful, rustic Spanish villas, relaxed sunny siestas, colourful fiestas and an old-fashioned, solid sense of family.
The Spanish interior design style is a wonderfully warm and friendly style – really easy to live with, and super-easy to achieve in your own home.
Just follow these few, simple guidelines…
Walls
To get a really authentic, rustic look, for your Spanish style, start with a textured base for your walls.
Try a ‘stucco’ style plaster on your walls, or a textured paint, such as suede effect paint, or even a color wash.
For a good color wash, use a paler base coat, then a darker shade of the same color for the top coat. Using a cloth or brush, add the (slightly diluted) top coat in random swirls or strokes. It takes a bit of practice to get a look you are happy with – but it will look very effective!
Choose really vibrant, rustic colors, with a Mediterranean feel – reds, yellows, oranges, pinks, blues, greens and browns. Also use plenty of white, as a nice bright, fresh base – which will freshen and lighten all your colors.
Choose hard flooring, rather than carpet, for an authentic, Spanish interior design style.
Ceramic tiles, terracotta tiles or hardwood flooring are all suitable floorings, but do choose rustic, and ethnic style rugs, in beautiful, vibrant colors, to create a warm and cosy feel to your decorating scheme.
Furniture
Choose good quality, rustic furniture for your Spanish interior design style.
The look is quite a simple, uncluttered look - so only choose the basics for your furniture needs.
Choose dark woods, in a well-loved, distressed or worn finish.
For a more elegant and ornate look, choose furniture with wrought iron and decorative features.
Accessories
Wrought iron is a fantastic material to use for your Spanish interior design style accessories too … Choose wrought iron chandeliers, wall lights, wall sconces and candlesticks.
Also go for really striking, ornate, wrought iron wall art – or decorative, carved, wooden wall panels, as an alternative – whether hung on white, or vibrantly colored walls, it will give you a fantastic, unusual focal point for your room – and a really authentic Mediterranean feel.
Tapestries are also beautiful hung on the wall, and help to create a warm, comfortable and family feel – particularly for homes built in colder parts of the world.
Because this is quite a simple and uncluttered style, Spanish interior design is not big on curtains.
Windows can be left bare if privacy is not an issue. If you do like to stay a little private, keep your window treatments quite simple – choose wooden Venetian blinds, or brightly painted, wooden shutters, for a perfect Spanish interior design style.
Don’t go overboard on the accessories for this look either – just a few striking accessories, carefully positioned, will do very well. Look out for urns, vases, planters, pots and all beautiful, vibrantly colored, rustic Spanish pottery.
Religious paintings and statues, and other religious imagery, are also a good way of getting an authentic look – particularly exquisitely painted statues, with plenty of gold.

Spanish colonial style – or ‘Mission style decorating’
This is a Spanish interior design style, which is mainly seen, these days, in the South-Western states of America.
This style mixes native American cultural styles with the style of the original Spanish settlers.
Choose rich yellows, beiges and reds – mixed with white, purple and pink.
This is a particularly simple and rustic look – so choose simple furniture, in solid woods and rustic styles – and mix with plenty of natural stone, ceramic and terracotta.
Spanish Revival Style
This is a Spanish interior design style of more recent origin – mainly seen in California. It began in the 1920’s, when modern tourists went on holiday, and got to experience Spanish culture and design for themselves.
This is a much more decorative style – choose finely carved, wooden doors, and decoratively carved wooden, and wrought-iron window grilles.
There is much more pattern in this style too – a good example is the Moorish influence, in the beautifully patterned, Spanish Catalina tiles. Include some in your decorating scheme – they are very striking – but you don’t need to go over the top!
Whichever style or look you go for, Spanish interior design will bring you a wonderfully bright, vibrant, warm and friendly feel. It is a very striking look – and will be sure to give you a huge emotional uplift, every time you come home.
So give it a try – and bring some happiness and color back into your life…!
