Stuck for Ideas for my Living Room

by Carrie
(Columbus, OH)

I really want to redecorate my living room, but I'm not very creative and I don't have much money. I can't even decide on a good color scheme for it.

I have a dark grey loveseat. It's kind of ugly, but it's what I have.

The woodwork in the room is brown. I have brown end tables, a brown hutch, and a brown piano.

One wall has a big mirror on it (my grandparents used to live here and put it up). I kind of like the mirror. It makes the room feel bigger.

Next to the door is a bay window that the cats love.

The carpet is kind of a light grey (I plan on eventually getting new carpet). The walls right now are white with a hint of blue that's barely noticeable.

I hate the white walls and want to add color, I'm just not sure what color. I love purple. My bedroom is currently purple.

The living room looks into the kitchen, which is decorated with Coca Cola stuff.

I have a painting that has pinks, blues, and purples in it that I'd like to hang in my living room.

I'm just totally lost and lacking creativity with how to even begin decorating this room.

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance!

Getting creative with color...
by: Charlotte

Hello Carrie

Don't worry about being on a budget - there's plenty of ideas you can try without having to do a major, expensive overhaul.

Perhaps your picture could be the starting point for your new design - there seems to be quite a nice mix of colors so you could choose one of these as the main color for your room.

The browns and greys you currently have for furniture, woodwork and carpet are neutral colors, so should mix well with whichever color you choose.

I guess your kitchen has quite a red theme? Red too should look fine next to any of these colors.

Pinks would make your room feel warm, and cosy - (if your room isn't that large, darker and brighter tones could make it feel a little smaller).

Pale blues and lilacs could make your room feel a little cold (as you've perhaps found with the whites and blues that are in there now) but should make it feel more spacious. Darker and deeper shades will add more depth and color (but you may lose a little of that spacious feeling too).

Soft medium tones in any of these colors can be an excellent compromise between getting a nice deep color and not losing the feeling of space - remember colors always seem to appear darker once you have painted your whole room in them, than just a tester area.

If you are worried about your room feeling too small, how about keeping the pale tones you have but adding a deeper pink or purple as an accent wall?

And add accessories in these shades too, to bring the color around the whole space. Curtains, cushions and throws can all help, as can vases, further artwork and other accessories.

How about painting your furniture in one of these colors too? This is a good way to add a really creative touch to your room, and without the cost of buying all new furniture.

Using all of the colors of your picture in various parts of your room (walls, accessories furniture etc) could give you a very interesting and colorful room, but still with a relaxing feel.

Some ideas for combining colors, here...

Hope this has given you some ideas you can try out in your home.

Good luck with your room makeover.

Best wishes

Charlotte :)

Lilac and red inspiration...
by: Charlotte

Carrie

I've today, coincidentally, just added a page to my website about decorating in lilac and red which I prepared last week - it occurred to me that this might give you some visual inspiration too, so thought I'd add the link here for you to see...

Click here to see more ideas to decorate a living room in lilac and red

Hope it helps

Best wishes

Charlotte
