Teal is a beautiful color - a deep mix of blues, greens and petrol blues - it takes all the best qualities of both blue and green - and this is what makes it so versatile and striking.
Although teal is actually quite a dark color, it can be used without too much difficulty in quite small rooms, without being too overpowering...
This is because teal is a cool color - in the 'blue family' - this makes walls painted in this color appear further away when you look at them...
Because it is also quite a deep color, it won't reflect too much light around your room, so take care if you'd like to use teal in a dark room - don't worry, though, as we'll look at options for lightening up the look a bit later...
The blue tinges make teal a lovely restful and relaxing color - suitable for rooms where you want to feel calm, such as bedrooms and living rooms.
The green tinges in teal make it feel not too cold and unwelcoming - as some pure blues can sometimes feel.
The teals I've used are delicously deep, rich and luxurious and will give a striking and dramatic feel in any room.
You can use teal as an accent color in your home - in fact, it does make an excellent accent color, but here I've chosen to show how to use teal as the basis of your decorating color scheme.
Use teal with whites and silver - this is best for a contemporary scheme in a simple style.
Use the light highlights of white as a contrast to the deep teal color
Use simple, streamlined furniture for a contemporary or retro style
Use white painted, ornate furniture for a glamorous vintage style with a bit of a kick!
Mirrored furniture will look great
Combine with black and white photos or simple prints on walls.
Here teal is mixed with colors which are next to it, or close to it on the interior design color wheel - blues, blue greens and greens.
You can mix together several of these colors for a blended but colorful feel.
You'll get the most dramatic results if you stick to mid-toned or deep-toned colors - this way the colors are all of equal or similar intensity and bounce off each other nicely!
Mix:
Teal
Petrol blue
Mid blue
Deep blues and navy
Aqua and turquoises
Bright greens
Citrus greens
Golds
Try not to include purpley blues, as they'll make your teal scheme quite dark, whereas the brighter citrus shades will give your scheme a lively 'zing'
Lighter and brighter colors, such as the citrus greens and golds will stand out well against the teal blue, and become your new accent colors, so use these in smaller amounts against your main teal color.
A statement teal wallpaper, or teal fabric, or one in a complementing blue or citrus green would look stunning on a focal wall or to create striking accents in your teal room.
With so much color and pattern abounding in your teal room, it makes sense to keep everything else simple - go for simple modern furniture and accessory styles.
Choose:
White
Chrome
Glass and mirror finishes
Light or 'blonde' woods such as beech or maple
Look for quality in all your finishes, and go for a natural look in fabric, such as cotton, satin, velvet or wool, and other materials, such as wood.
For the ultimate in luxurious sophistication mix in a few classy looking antiques and reproductions for accessories and artwork - remember to keep it simple, so don't choose anything too fussy!
Mix teal with flamingo pink and gold (see moodboard below...)
This is a fabulously fun look at teal - something a little colorful and quirky...
Here you can mix teal with yellows and greens, and then contrast against a shocking flamingo pink!
It may sound a bit crazy, but if you invest in your own interior design color wheel you'll find out how to create a scheme like this...
This is called a split complementary scheme - and takes a host of 'harmonious colors' (like the ones in the section above) - here:
Green
Teal
Citrus Green
Yellow
Gold
...and then mixes them with their opposite on the color wheel - which in this case is the flamingo pink
I've had a bit of fun with this teal color moodboard - and let the absolutely gorgeous flamingo wallpaper dictate the style of the room - I've gone with a funky and quirky, fun-flamingo tropical style...
...so as well as the flamingo, I've mixed in images of lush foliage plants.
In this teal color moodboard, I've kept the look simple with sleek black furniture, but you could style this fabulously-flamingo look with paler, cream furniture, light woods or even something kitsch and colorful, or 'totally tropical' cane (wicker) and bamboo!
You can definitely have a bit of fun with this look!
How to Adapt the Teal Color Schemes to Suit your own Room
If you love teal color schemes, but don't think it quite suits your room or your personality to have it all over, as a teal background, you can include your color as teal accents with softer greens, slate grays and blues
Try teal accents against white or silver as a light and bright color scheme, that would really suit a minimalist style or a small or dark room.
Try teal accents against soft pinks and apricots for a warm, cozy and comfortable feel.
Try teal as an accent color against soft neutrals of browns, beiges and taupes, to liven up a neutral scheme, and for a simple, stylish and relaxing feel.
I do hope my teal color moodboards have inspired you to try teal out in your own interior design color schemes...
Test it out with tester-pots first to see what suits your room, and your own taste - then get creative and go tantalizingly teal!
