Teen Bedroom Paint Inspiration

by Emily
(Powell, OH United States)

Hi! I really want to redo my bedroom because the last time it was repainted I was five years old... currently I'm fourteen and this fall I'm going into High School and turning fifteen.

I think my room is too outdated for me, but my dad thinks it looks great. He has finally agreed to let me (yes, me and only me) paint my room on his conditions... it has to be easy to paint over (light colors) and I have to refinish my bed.

I have my great-grandmother's wooden furniture and it is a medium dark wood.

I also really like the color purple and but I'm worried I'll grow out of it and want to repaint my room again.

Also, since I have my great-grandma's furniture I can't get rid of it so I need ideas on other ways I can make the space my own...

Thanks,
Emily<3

Getting it right first time...
by: Charlotte

Hi Emily

Sounds like you definitely need an update to your room - your ideas and tastes will be very different now than when you were a little girl of 5...

...but well done Dad for allowing you your choice of room color (with some limitations!)

With having to do all the work yourself, I can understand that you want to get it right first time, and not have to be thinking about doing all that painting again!

You are restricted to light colors - but that is great - as light colors tend to be much easier to live with than dark colors, so you'll be less likely to need a change too quickly!

Purple is a lovely, rich color - and very relaxing for bedrooms - but if you are already worrying that you might get fed up of it, I'm thinking maybe you don't love it enough to commit to it...?

Deep purples can be, indeed, very tiring on the eye - but what about a paler lilac or mauve?

Lilac is a lovely color for relaxation, with quite a spiritual feel - you could 'accent' with small amounts of a deeper purple, if you liked...

...or it's 'opposite' (complementary) color - gold.

Or you could make the basis of your room a soft, light gold or sand color and accent with purples.

Do you like a warm and cosy feel in a bedroom? If so choose colors from the warmer end of the spectrum - these are colors with warm reds, oranges and yellows in (including red-tinged purples)...

Do you like a clean, spacious or fresh feel? Then go with tones of paler blues and greens...

Green is actually a very popular color for a bedroom - a nice soft and pale green is very relaxing in a bedroom...

...but don't use too much pale green all at once as it can look bland and boring...

You can brighten green up with 'accents' of pink...

...or of orange and/or purple.

'Accents' are just little focal points you put in to brighten up your decor scheme, add a little interest and color, and help it to become more 'alive' - a great way to get your own tastes into the room, too.

You generally choose a color that really complements the main color in some way - either by 'harmonising' - a similar color - or contrasting - an 'opposite' color...

(More about that, here...)

You might choose to have pictures, curtains, bedding, throws, cushions, vases, ornaments etc in the 'accent' color.

You have some lovely mid-toned wood in your room - I'm guessing that it is traditional in style?

I'm wondering if some of these looks might be in-keeping with the furniture, and inspire you for your new look...?

Romantic bedroom decorating looks

Shabby chic (usually furniture is painted white or cream, but you could still get the look with wood-colored wood, if you aren't allowed to paint the furniture)

French style

Lots of colors should go really well with the wood - you can choose warm tones to complement it - yellows and apricots/terracottas - or choose a lovely pale blue or green for more contrast...

Pale blue and mid or dark toned warm wood is actually a stunning contrast! You could also add some kind of retro 'ditsy' print or style (something like this) to brighten it up a bit?

I'm a bit conscious that you probably don't have a very large budget for accessorising...

...so I'm wondering about buying some fabric, or cheap (but lovely - of course!) sheets and creating your own curtains, cushions, possibly a bed throw...?

(Another good idea for getting the colors and styles you want, in the room...)

You can even use a large piece of fabric (choose one in a lovely color, and/or a beautiful pattern you love) as a wall-hanging, behind your bed, or on the opposite wall (so you can see it when you are in bed!)...

The sewing needn't be too difficult!

I've made some great fabric wall-hangings just by using a staple-gun (watch those fingers!!) to staple a piece of fabric to a garden cane - and hung it from 2 nails or screws in the wall (make sure you put the stapled edge to the back!)

You can use little curtain clips to attach your simple fabric curtain (as simple as a plain, flat sheet!) onto a thin pole...

(You can fold over fabric at the top to make a kind of attractive 'pelmet' to make it fancier, or if the fabric is too long - keep to lightweight fabrics as the clips tend to only be quite little!)

You can also use what we call in the UK - 'wundaweb' - a no-sew hemming fabric that bonds the 2 fabrics together...

Like this...

Cushions you may have to do a small amount of sewing for! It's not too much though!

I hope some of these ideas help - take a look at this ...

...and the one on
bedrooms for some more ideas, tips and, hopefully, inspirations!

Good luck with your bedroom makeover - I hope you get a room you love soon!

Do come back and let us know how you are getting on - or come back and ask more questions if you get stuck.
