Teenage Girl's Room

by Amy
(Ireland)

My room is a funny shape some of the roof is slanted, so its hard trying to get furniture in.

It can get really dull in the winter as well.

It is purple with built in furniture that is purple too. We're planning on taking out the built in furniture.

I love my room but i want something new bright and vibrant -(keeping in mind that i'm on a tight budget - I am only 15)

I have photos of me and my friends in every corner of my room and I would like to keep that but still give the room a total revamp!

Originally I wanted a chinese design with red walls and black furniture but that would be to dull.

A major problem is that I dont know what colours I want. I love bright colours but I dont want something that is to girly girl!

Can you help?

Colorful!

Hi Amy

Its great to have an unusual shaped room - even if it does make it a little more awkward to decorate and plan for.

Even if you want to get rid of your purple fitted furniture it make be easier to use fitted furniture again to make the most of your space - the areas where walls meet sloping ceilings can often be usefully used for storage with custom built furniture where other furniture may not fit.

If your budget is tight do consider revamping your old furniture if possible - could it be painted? reused in a different spot?

You can get some ideas for awkward shaped rooms, here...

As far as color goes, pale colors usually help make your space feel larger - (blue tints too - but these may feel somewhat cold in dull weather). Although yellow may be quite a strong color, it will certainly make your room feel more welcoming and cheerful, on even the darkest winter day.

A pale green may also work well on walls (and ceilings) as this is restful and reflects a lot of light around - you can add bright accessories to get a bright colorful feel.

Dark or very bright colors used all over and warmer tones (reds and oranges) can make the room feel smaller.

It can be a good idea to use tester pots to decide on colors - and as a general rule choose a shade or two lighter than the one you think, as they tend to look darker once they are on all over.

You could also paint your room in a very light giving white or cream, and add interest with bright accessories.

I just wanted to show you a lovely throw I have (on my sofa, at the moment, actually) as I thought it might give you some ideas for lovely bright and cheerful colors without being overly pink and twee (is that what you meant by girly?)

Just a few carefully chosen accessories in a mixture of these colors can brighten up a room painted just in a plain (light and space giving) white or cream - throws, cushions, shelves, art (you could make your own), picture frames for your photos etc can give you the look of bright color without being too overpowering for your space.

Continues from above comment...

You can get a much lighter, brighter feel with using mirrors in your room, to reflect all available light around, and don't forget to use plenty of desk or table lamps if you need to brighten up dark corners - I also think strings of fairy lights give a wonderful feel in a bedroom too!

I do think, too, that, like you say, red and black might be a bit dark and overpowering in your space.

Have you looked at our teenage bedroom photo gallery, here...? It might give you some more ideas...

And more tips for teenage bedroom decorating here...

I hope that gives you some ideas for your room makeover - good luck - do come back and show us your results here...

Best wishes

Well colors are the key factors which click very first when we think to renovate any room. Pastel shades goes well with every season.

Being a girl you can simply highlight the feature/ bed wall by adding a sense of your creativity-- be it as your family photo collage, use of mirrors, cluster of paintings, art of stenciling or your hobby/ craft skills.

As far as furniture is concern, low height furniture will perfectly suits your room style as its been possessed with slanted roof.

Apart from that, you can plan a sitting arrangement lying a mattress with bright covering linen thrown with couples of soft bright cushions.

However I am sure this re- do will not shake your budget too much. You can re-model your existing/ built- in furniture according to your need.

It would be best if u put glass shelves in the built-in left over space. Apparently these glass shelves can be well utilized keeping your books collections or other girly glittery heap, stuff toys.

I hope my idea will help you in developing successful design.

Cheers and keep designing!
