Too Dark Lounge

by Donna
(South Africa)

Hi. I have a flat on a farm. My biggest problem is my lounge/living room.

It is a long narrow room. It has dark brown carpeting and unfortunately the lounge suite we bought before we found this place was also dark brown.

I like a contemporary sophisticated look but have no idea of how to put it together.

I have 3 floating shelves in the middle of a huge long wall. I know I should find some wonderful pictures to put either side but I do not know if I should put 1 big picture or 3 smaller pictures underneath each other on each side of these shelves.

Our coffee table and side tables are also dark wood.

How do I brighten my living room up as it seems extremely dark at the moment.

Lighten and brighten...
by: Charlotte

Hello Donna

I can see that your room would feel very dark - the good news is that dark brown is a good color to be the basis of a contemporary scheme.

Lightening and brightening your room is your first job. You can do this by painting walls and/or accessorizing.

Light and pale colors will of course lighten your space, but these can sometimes contrast too harshly with dark floors and furniture and give a cold, or stark feel.

Bright colors can be an excellent choice too, then. Think hot fuschia pink, zingy lime green or (pale) teal blue - which all look stunning with dark brown, and are right on trend.

These needn't be used all over walls - painting the end walls in these colors (and the long walls in a pale, neutral shade) can help your room feel less like a long narrow corridor.

Adding rugs in your chosen color scheme will help to break up that large expanse of dark floor, while cushions and throws will liven up dark sofas and chairs.

Continue your chosen color scheme around the room with artwork, curtains, blinds, vases etc etc.

Remember to stick to light and bright colors to liven up your dark room.

There are no hard and fast rules about how you should arrange your pictures - one large picture will have more impact than a group - or how about an arrangement of 4 in a square? or 3 or more staggered in a diagonal arrangement for something a bit different?

It is a good idea to try and make one of the end walls the focal wall of the room, perhaps by adding large or striking artwork here too - this will help even out the long narrow proportions of the room.

I hope that some of these ideas will be useful for your design dilemma. Good luck with your makeover, and I hope that soon you will love your lounge.

Best wishes
