Victorian ideas for a rental

by Jacquelyne
(Salisbury MD)

I live in a rental and can't paint the walls but I can paint the trim, for it's easy to repaint if moving.

I love the Victorian look and have gotten so many ideas from your site. (Thank you)

I have a large opening between my living room & dining room. All my walls are white including the molding & the trim.

Dining room I'm accessorizing in blue & green, living room I have a dark green couch and a cream large leather chair.

I've accessorized the room so far with antique gold shelf and picture frames, black wrought iron 5 candle centerpiece. Roses and a large black flower pot full of silk flowers.

My question is this what color would be nice on the door frames, molding and window frames? I was thinking rose for the doorway molding facing the Living Room and Gold for the Dining Room facing molding and door that is off Dining Room.

If you need me to put up a picture I can but you'll have to tell me how.

Thank You :)

Rose and Gold - Glorious!
by: Charlotte

Hello Jacquelyne

Thank you for writing to me, and for your kind comments about my site :) glad it's proved helpful for you.

Although in Victorian times they decorated their homes with quite deep and dark colors, luckily these days we can get a pretty, Victorian inspired look with whites and pale colors, which are perfect for your home and it's light colored walls...

Click here for more about pale and pretty Victorian inspired interior design...

Painting the trim and moldings is a good way of adding that little bit of color and interest into your room, and softening all that white, as all-over white can be quite harsh and cold to live with.

You can get a soft and romantic, all-over, quite light look, inspired by the paler Victorian look.

Your ideas of rose and gold for living room and dining room, respectively sound great.

Your scheme then for the living room would be rose (pink), deep green and cream - I'm thinking add some lovely floral, vintage rose accessories in pinks and greens, to make the most of that color scheme.

Your scheme for the dining room would be blue, green and gold. I'm assuming the antique gold shelf is in the dining room area?

The greens in both rooms should provide a link between the 2 schemes.

If you'd prefer to paint all moldings in the same color (depending on how much you want the 2 rooms to feel like a unified space, or 2 separate rooms) - you could paint the trim and moldings in both, in the same gold, and introduce the rose color in the living room with accessories, such as floral, rose, fabrics.

Take care that the wrought iron doesn't look too out of place and 'dark' (and the black flower pot). With the gold trim and molding, I'm thinking it would be really nice to spray your candle centerpiece with a similar antique gold paint. The plant pot could be similarly sprayed, or even painted, to bring the whole look together.

I hope some of these ideas help you, Jacquelyne, please don't hesitate to come back and ask again if you'd like more help.

Good luck with your makeover - hope it goes well. It sounds like a very pretty scheme :)

Do come back and tell us how you get on, and share photos of your project, here... (There is a section in the form to upload your photos, just click the 'choose file' button to select photos from your desktop.)

Hope it helps.

Best wishes

A Work in Progress
by: Anonymous

Thank you for your advice it was very helpful! In fact so helpful that I've changed my Living room up again.

My living room is 35' long 13' of that I'm using for my office area, so I'm working with a 22' x 12' living room.

One window facing east and one window facing west right behind desk which is facing my living
room area, I love to work looking out both of my windows.

Since my desk is in part of my Living Room I don't want to put my back to anyone and I can see my tv too, this works great for me and my DH.

I now have a black valence on my Living Room window with a beautiful satin, wine colored drape (looks breath-taking when the sun comes through it!) Actually it was a satin queen size top sheet that I just put the curtain rod through the hem, and bingo it became my beautiful drape curtain, love the way it hangs on the floor too! :)

On both sides of that window I have long mirrors in antique frames, they look so nice I bought them at a thrift store for only $15 each the glass is also bevelled and I love them.

Between the right side of the window and the mirror I have a large black pretty flower vase which I put in a green vine and have the vine growing up the wall.

I sat the vase on a short little accent table 2' (table needs painting right now) with the vase and the small table it comes up to the top of the window frame, on the floor beside that I have a victorian doll.

On the left side of the window I have a wicker trunk it's reddish brown I'm wondering if I should spray paint it? And what color??

At the moment I'm using it for the only side table in the living room. I have a lamp sitting on for now.

My all green couch now has a comforter on it (one that I've already had put away in the wicker trunk) I pulled it out and layed it on the couch and was surprised how nice it looked! A Queen-size, so it gave me enough to tuck behind the couch and to tuck under the three couch pillows and tuck in the side, it fits real good I love it!

Mauve roses with green strips between the stripes is gold. I took the pillow cases from the wine sheet set and put my couch pillows in them, looks great too.

Still using my other 2 couch pillow which is a lighter green then the couch, I have 5 couch pillow, do you think that to many?

I have a large mirror over my couch with a brown frame that I will be painting antique gold, beside that is my antique shelf and on the other side are two small pictures but the frames are gold, do you think it ok to use the two together? Gold & Antique Gold?

Using your advice I am going to paint all my molding and trim gold or antique gold?

My Living Room is starting to take on the Victorian feel and my creativness is flowing too.

Creative and pretty!
by: Charlotte

Hello Jacquelyne

Thanks for your kind comments - glad the info was helpful for you.

Thanks for the extra info - I can really visualize your room now, and it sounds like it looks really great.

Your home office sounds like it's perfectly positioned!

And I love your creativity to make some very beautiful sounding curtains, and an inventive couch cover - great idea!

You have some very nice touches and I can see that your scheme is coming together.

If your wicker trunk seems to look out of place then definitely try painting it. Try a little in a corner or on the back first, to see how you like it, and how it adheres to the surface. Look for a specialist paint, and/or suitable primer, too.

I think a gold (not too metallic or shiny, though) would look nice for the trunk, or a soft green, maybe even a pink or mauve (to go with the mauve and wine colors you have, too). On the whole I think a light to medium tone would look better than dark, but if you think otherwise, try some out.

If you can still sit comfortably on your couch, 5 couch pillows is OK - if they start getting in the way, lose some. A lot will depend on the size of your couch, and the size of your cushions, as to whether it's too many.

Yes, I definitely think it's OK to use gold with antique gold in your room - it would be very difficult to get all the gold you use to be exactly the same, so I do think that a little variation in color/tone in the gold is perfectly acceptable and adds to the whole scheme and the real, personal feel in your room...

The only time I would caution against it, is if the gold you intend to add into your scheme is obviously and clearly far too bright or out of place, so that it stands out too much, and looks wrong.

Good luck with the rest of your makeover - your scheme is really coming together, and sounds so pretty.

Do ask again, if I can be of more help. And do come back and let us know how it all turns out!

Best wishes

Charlotte
