Walnut dining set in a red dining room

We are moving to a new house which is bigger and has a nice formal dining room.

The dining table and chair that we have is nice, but not too stylish. It is good quality, but nothing fancy about it. Goes well with the current house we have.

The new house is painted red with embossed texture. It gives a rich look and i feel this table that is walnut colour will certainly be out of place.

Since we just bought this house, we are tight on money and will not be able to buy new furniture and at the same time i dont want to repaint the walls as they look nice and royal.

How do i make my walnut dining set look good in the formal dining room. It is a six seater.

I have attached the dining table picture.

Just a bit of white can help lighten the effect and make it work
by: Charlotte

Hello

Congratulations on your new home. Your new dining room sounds lovely - red is a great color for a dining room - very rich and dramatic, stimulates the appetite and flatters the complexion.

As your current dining table does have red and orange tones in it, I don't think it 'won't go' completely...

...but the dark wood against the dark walls may make the whole room feel rather dark and gloomy, which isn't the effect you want.

There are a few things you can try...

-Try the table as it is - and lighten the effect in the room by adding pale white or cream accessories such as curtains, pictures, large mirrors etc...

...and also perhaps adding a pale table runner or table cloth to the dining table, just to break up that large expanse of dark wood - and/or recovering seat cushions with a pale colour (white or cream).

-Add fabric seat covers to the seats (pale - white or cream)

-Paint your table and chairs in a white or cream paint.

Rub down the wood a little first and use a suitable primer and paint for wood. You can finish with some antiquing wax on top for an 'antiqued' or 'shabby chic' type finish.

Make the most of the white and cream 'theme' in the room, by choosing accessories, pictures etc to match.

Hope that gives you some ideas to try - and hopefully soon both you and your dining table will be happily installed in your new home.

Good luck with the move.

Best wishes

Charlotte
