What color to paint the brick on the outside of the house?

We want to try to update the parsonage.

The outside of the house is about a mid 1970's yellow/tan brick, from the bottom up to the eaves.

We were going to just paint the wood trim a new color, but have decided that a better updated idea would be to paint the brick.

The question is
1. do you agree?
2. What color to paint the brick?

In thinking about it, I don't ever remember seeing a painted brick house, painted anything but white.

Is there a better, more updated color we should consider?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Sandra

Many colors to choose from...
by: Charlotte

Hello Sandra

Thanks for your question.

Bricks are more traditionally left bare than painted, as once painted the surface usually takes more upkeep to maintain, and may require further coats of paint to freshen up every few years, or may start to look tatty if paint starts to crack and peel.

To reduce the risk of the paint peeling unattractively, make sure you prepare surfaces well, cleaning the brick, and use a specialist brick, cement or masonry paint to ensure adequate coverage and maximum durability.

Here in the UK you can see painted brick houses of many different colors - although usually the paler colors give a more attractive appearance.

Some other colors you might want to consider are: cream, lemon, pale pink, pale blue, pale mint green - grey, a sand color and a pale sage green can also look quite attractive if any of these take your fancy.

Try testers in an inconspicuous spot before you make your decision, and always ere on the side of caution by chosing the paler option - your chosen colors can seem very bright once you've painted such a large area as the outside of your house.

Be aware that the impact of changing your exterior house color will be large, and it may well take some getting used to.

I hope this has helped.

Good luck with your exterior makeover project

Charlotte
