What colour of curtains for my living room

My living room is south facing 13' x 18' with a 7' wide window, the suite is tan leather and the flooring and coffee table etc are in light oak, the walls are wallpapered in a plain creamy beige colour.

Curtains at the moment are in a pale gold colour but I feel I need a bit of colour as everything is a bit the same.

Any suggestions for new curtains?

Colors to brighten up a living room...

Hello Margaret

It sounds like you already have a great basis for your scheme, well done...

Golds are a lovely color for a south-facing room.

Do you need to buy new curtains or could you inject some color inexpensively and easily by adding splashes of color elsewhere in the room...?

For example, you could try colors in cushions, throws, pictures and artwork, accessories, vases, candles etc.

If you wanted to brighten up your existing curtains without buying new, you could sew strips of colored ribbon across, or add larger panels of fabric in stripes across the curtains.

As far as colors go, whether you are buying new curtains and/or accessories, or 'upcycling' your existing ones you have lots of colors to choose from.

Your creams, beiges, golds and tans sound like they make a perfect neutral base for adding your own choice of colors to.

What kind of colors do you prefer? Something very vibrant and lively? Something rich? Something warm? Something fresh? Something pastel?

For a 'warm' and cosy feeling room, try 'warm' colors, like reds and oranges, apricots, teerracottas...

For something cool and calm, try greens and blues.

You can get quite a dramatic effect by using violets, purples or mauves and lilacs.

You can choose any of these colors in whichever vibrant, deep or subtle tone you naturally prefer.

Really vibrant and lively colors will need much less to make an impact - so this would be a good choice if you wanted to add just a few cushions and accessories to liven up your look.

Rich, deep and dark colors may make a room feel much darker used in large quantities, but in smaller amounts they can be a smart contrast to your paler tones.

Paler and pastel colors tend to 'blend in' more easily, so you can use larger amounts without it feeling too overwhelming.

My top 2 color choices to add into your room, particularly with the wood tones, tan and gold would be:

-rich orange, red and russett tones - would pick up any orangey tones in the tan sofa, and deepen and brighten your existing color scheme, whilst still harmonising...

(It's called a harmonious color scheme as the colors are next to each other on the color wheel)

-A purpley-violet blue - any tone from pale to dark. This works as it is opposite your tan and gold shades on the color wheel so gives quite a vibrant and more 'lively' feel.
