What does it mean?

Struggling with interior design terms? Not sure exactly what that expression means... It's easy when you're used to something, to use technical terms all the time! But what when you're not used to something... If you're just a beginner, it can all just start to sound like 'gobble-de-gook'... And that doesn't help anyone... So, if you're not sure what it means, and it's making you stuck - say so - I'm sure when you ask you'll make lots of people wish they'd already asked too! Here are some readers who have asked what does it all mean? And here are their replies too... If these weren't the interior design terms you were stuck on, why not ask your own 'what does it mean' question here...

Understanding proportion in interior design
by patricia
(jakarta, jawa, indonesia)
What is the meaning of proportion in a room? ...and what kind of problem in proportion? ...I need examples please...
Comments:
Hello Patricia
The proportion of a room refers to its size and shape - whether it might appear too tall, too short, too wide, too narrow, too large etc...
These can all be big problems in interior design, and are factors that you should consider in your planning and design stage, so that you don't end up with a room that feels dark, dingy and poky, or a room that feels like a cold empty hall, when you just want to sit and relax and feel cosy.
Although the proportions of your room are physical, and you may not be able to physically change these, happily there are interior design tricks and techniques that can lessen their effects, and make your room feel much more 'normally proportioned'.
If you want to find out more about how interior designers deal with problems with room proportion, take a look at my 'Room Proportions section'.
I hope that is helpful for you.
And thanks very much for your kind comments about my site through my 'contact me' page (I am assuming you are the same Patricia?)
Best wishes,
Charlotte :o)

Understanding concept in interior design
by priyanka j
(india)
hi I am Priyanka I dont understand what exactly a concept is and how to go about it in the house I am a student and have been given a project on a bunglow at Chennai which is next to the Chennai airport....so please if you could suggest me a few concepts...
Reply: Hello Priyanka
First, as you are an interior design student, you should certainly ask your teacher to explain the idea of the 'concept' to you - and ask them to explain to you exactly what they expect from you in your project.
A concept is basically just an idea or basis that you have for a project.
In your interior design concept you should say what you are trying to achieve in your design - and why you have chosen to design in such a style and with particular colors, themes and with particular products.
For example, if you chose to design an eco-aware bungalow, you might want to include in your concept why the idea of eco-awareness was important and why you chose it for your clients - how do you want your clients to feel in the space - and what did you do to achieve this.
I have, a few days ago, written some ideas for another interior design student looking for a concept for a bungalow here.
Is this the same project?
As the bungalow is near the airport, perhaps you could investigate and incorporate some noise reduction ideas in your design for the bungalow...
-big thick curtains perhaps? -indoor water features (provide an alternative source of noise)?
Plenty of soft furnishings in a room can help to deaden noise.
I hope this information is helpful for you Priyanka.
Wishing you very good luck in your project.
Best wishes
Charlotte
