Which color sofa for living room?

by Loraine
(United States)

Hello,

I have a small size living room. The wall color is warm taupe; and my floors, coffee and end tables are light oak wash.

Which color should I choose for a sofa?

I didn't want my living room to look too bland.

Please help...thank you.

Lots of choice!
by: Charlotte

Hello Loraine

Thanks for your enquiry. The good news is you can pretty much choose any color you like for your sofa.

Your living room at the moment is filled with warm neutrals, which will go with most colors.

I would avoid choosing a pale sofa in similar tones, which, while it would blend in nicely, may make the room look a little bland.

If you want to make a statement with your sofa, a brightly coloured one would make a big impact. Something red or green would look stunning.

If you don't want to commit yourself to something so bold (a sofa can be a large financial commitment, so ideally you want to choose something that you will be happy with and will look good for years) a darker color sofa would stand out nicely against your room.

I feel a mid or dark brown or tan would suit your choice of room colors very well, and any sofa (even a pale one, should you feel so inclined) can be brightened up with one or more vibrant accent colors in the shape of throws and cushions.

Take a look at the section on decorating with colors, particularly the pages on choosing a color to suit you and putting together great decorating color schemes for some ideas about which colors you might like to choose.

An accent color (or colors) on your sofa, throws and cushions can be repeated in accessories, curtains, pictures etc around the room, for the best effect.

I hope this has given you some ideas for your sofa purchase.

Good luck with your room makeover

Choosing a sofa
by: M.J.Smith

I agree with what has already been said. My preference would be a burgundy or a brown which both go nicely with oak tables.

I have a brown sofa with a small muted plaid in green & eggplant. You don't see the colors until you are up close. I have two brown (and gold) Paisley throw pillows on it. My walls are a muted gold.

If you choose the brown for the sofa, you can paint your room many different colors should you tire of the beige.

Good luck!

One more question...

Thank you for your quick response, and suggestions.

One more question ~ will the dark brown make the space feel small?

A bit! (but it needn't be too bad!)
by: Charlotte

Hello Loraine

Yes the dark brown would make the space feel a little smaller and darker than a pale sofa, but this is limited if you have pale walls, and can be helped by choosing pale or bright colors for any throws, cushions accessories on your sofa, as this breaks up the large, dark shape, and makes it seem less overwhelming.

Hope this helps with your decision.
