window coverings for great room/kitchen

by Lisa
(California)

I have been agonizing over this - so thought I would finally ask for help! I have attached the floorplan of our living room/kitchen and I would like advice on window coverings -- mainly color.

The cabinets and floors are dark rustic wood (like espresso), the wall color is a light amber color, there is white trim/crown mouldings and 10ft ceilings.

I put a rough idea of our sofa and coffee table on the photo.

For the 6 windows in the living room - I am thinking roman shades because there are bookshelves under the two windows on the fireplace wall - so floor length curtains are not an option there.

For the sliding door - I wanted to do red floor length curtains for a dramatic look when you come in the front door. For the kitchen window - some type of shade?

I am thinking of doing one color of roman shades on the six living room windows (found a swatch of amber/gold that I really like) and then doing red curtains on the sliding door.

I am worried I am breaking a "rule" by not doing all the windows coverings same color in this "great" room. I would love to get opinions on this!

I love the color red and want to see that around the sliding door when you come in front - but don't want to do red on the 6 windows - just seems like too much red, too big if an investment in red and a hard color to redecorate around in the future.

And then - what do I do with the kitchen window?

Thanks!
Lisa

Cosy Colors!
by: Charlotte

Hello Lisa

Your home looks lovely, and it sounds like you already have the basis of a beautiful and warm color scheme.

Roman blinds sounds a great idea for the 6 windows - keeping it simple as there are a lot of them! (Lucky you!) ...and so many curtains all around the room may look a little 'full' or 'fussy'.

I can understand where you are coming from with your concerns about a different color window treatment on windows and doors...

...and I do agree that ideally window treatments should all match - it gives the room a co-ordinated feel...

...but... thinking about it we have a different curtain for our kitchen door than our blinds - pale blue curtain and white wood blinds - and I think because they are slightly separate, and a different format/style - it kind of works and looks OK...

I think this could be the case with yours too! As you are using blinds on the windows 'proper', and the curtain is different, and separately located (you won't be looking at both together, for example, when sitting on your sofa) this idea could work with yours too.

I agree, too, red is a very strong color, so it is best to use it in small doses: 1) so it keeps it's focal point impact, and 2) so it doesn't become too overwhelming!

It's a great color too, though, and I can understand that you love it - make sure you choose a red with orange undertones (rather than blue/purpley undertones) to keep in with the amber and gold theme.

To make it work in your space, using it on it's own can make it stand out a little too much, so I do suggest using it in a couple more places around the space, to 'balance' it out a bit...

...it doesn't need too much - as we've already said - just a picture, or vase perhaps...

I was wondering if perhaps you could tie some red in with your kitchen window covering too - a simple blind in a similar red, or perhaps with just some red trim?

...then these 2 will be tied in together too.

You've got quite a warm and cosy color scheme there, with lots of warm colors - it can be wonderful to have such a welcoming and cosy room - but if you feel it getting a little too 'hot' you can easily tone it down with some lighter colors - soft creams and beiges - just a few 'accents' can really do the trick and just take the 'edge' off.

I hope some of these ideas will help you make your decisions.

Good luck!

Best wishes

Charlotte :o)
