Measuring-up Blinds for Windows
When you measure your window, for new blinds, to get the most accurate measurement - take 3 measurements at different points along the window. Choose the shortest measurement, to get the best fit.
When you are deciding on your window treatments and blinds, firstly, pick whether you want it to hang inside or outside your window recess.
Blinds Fitting Inside the Window Recess
If you want your blinds to hang inside the window recess, your recess should have a depth of at least 10cm (4 inches).
For a blind fitting inside the recess, the blind fixing should fit the recess exactly.
The actual fabric of the blind should be 4cm (1 & 1/2 inches) less than this size - a 2cm movement space on either side.
A bought blind can be easily trimmed to fit your window precisely.
Blinds Fitting Outside the Window Recess
For blinds fitting outside the window recess, the top of the blind should be 4.5cm (1 & 3/4 inches) above the top of the window.
The width of the blind should be 4.5cm wider (1 & 3/4 inches) than the recess, at each side - 9cm in total (3 & 1/2 inches).
For most blinds for windows the length/drop is adjustable, but for styles of blinds where you need a specific length - such as Roman Blinds - aim for 4.5cm below the sill. (1 & 3/4 inches)
When you have measured your windows correctly, you know exactly what you are looking for, now go ahead and choose the style of blind that will suit your room best - there's loads to choose from - and a blind that will suit every home, whether modern or traditional in style.
