Bedroom Decorating
Styles and Design

bedroom decorating styles

Read bedroom decorating styles and design tips. Learn how to choose the best design for you and your home. Get the look right in your bedroom.

It is all very well, creating a well-organised, clutter-free zone. While this is an essential - I say you need more from your bedroom. Your bedroom needs to be your own personal haven, a restful space - your private spot for relaxing, and shutting out the rest of the world.

  • Your bedroom should be the most private room in the whole of your house. It's your room - so, make it personal to you. This is the place where you can indulge your own personal whims and fantasies (hey, steady there, now!)

  • Don't get carried away though - unless you want to, of course - it's your own private space! Follow these few simple guidelines on bedroom decorating styles and design. Learn to create your own personal room, that you will be proud to show off to the rest of the world!

  • A great place to start your bedroom design is your bed. Your bed will automatically be the focal point of your room. You can choose a dramatic, statement piece - a Four-poster bed, a cast-iron bed-stead, wooden sleigh-bed - or choose a neutral, simple bed, that will last, and will go with several changes of decor and style.Get more advice on decorating your bedroom and choosing your bed and bedding.

  • Choose sumptuous and luxurious bed-linen. As the bed is the focal point of your room, it makes sense to choose the bed-linen first. Choose a bed-linen you really love, and it can become the inspiration and starting point for your bedroom decorating styles.

  • Choose a matching valance, for a smart look to your bed. Then, pile on layers of luxurious bedding, throws and cushions. Create a cosy and comfortable space, that really entices you to cuddle up in it.

  • Go for the best quality bedroom furniture that you can afford. Choose good looking, neutral furniture, that will last, and allows you plenty of color options for the future.

  • Your choice of colors for your decorating bedroom styles, depends on the feel you want for your room.
    • Do you want a spacious and airy feel? If so, choose pale colors and cool colors.
    • Do you want to create a warm, cosy retreat? If so, choose deeper, warm colors.
    • Learn more about how to use color in your decorating plans. Dip into this decorating with color section, for tips and advice.

  • Decorating your bedroom is actually a good opportunity to use deeper colors than you usually would in the rest of the house. It is your own private space - and it will mostly be seen in the evening or night, under artificial, or softened lighting. Deep, rich colors work really well in such conditions.

  • Be careful though, as colors that look fantastic on a night, may not be easy to wake up to, in the cold light of day. Just take the 'cosy orange' I painted my old bedroom (...never a fantastic choice for a bedroom, anyway) - gorgeous on a cold, winter night - on a bright Spring morning the whole room glowed, pulsated, and felt like Hell!

  • If you want to go for warm, cosy bedroom decorating styles, go for warm, earthy tones - beiges, stone colors, terracotta, pale browns, warm, rich neutrals and muted greens.

  • For a more spacious and airy feel, pale greens and blues are excellent choices - they are calm and restful.

  • For both warm and cool colors, choose soft pastels and muted tones, (unless you are after an obviously dramatic feel to your room). Add colorful accessories, as accents, to give a little lift, and life, to your room.

  • It is best to avoid stimulating colors, like red, orange and yellow, when decorating your bedroom. These colors won't create a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom, and may even stop you sleeping. Also, steer clear of any violently contrasting or clashing color combinations.

  • You can create great bedroom decorating styles, that are easy to change, if you stick to neutrals, or very pale colors, for most of the room. Do try, though, creating a focal wall out of the wall behind the bed. This means that you can use quite a strong, bright or dramatic color, or pattern, and it won't disturb you as you lie in bed - as you will be facing away from it. You will be able to see and appreciate it's dramatic effect as you enter the room, though.

  • This is a fantastic opportunity to use one of the really lovely patterned wallpapers, that are so fashionable right now. If you have chosen a strong pattern for your bedding, do consider whether a patterned wallpaper will go - read interior design tricks for using pattern successfully.

  • Choose a lovely, soft carpet or rug, that will feel gorgeous on your bare toes, and keep you warm on chilly, winter nights.

  • If you have gone for a dramatic accent wall, or bedding, it might be best to keep your window treatments simple. Choose neutral curtains, or simple roman blinds - that still give a soft and comfortable feel to the room, but don't clutter it visually. A voile or lace panel, with tie-backs, is a very good choice for all bedroom decorating styles - providing privacy at the window, as well as a simple, soft elegance.

  • If your room faces east, it will catch the morning sun. Even if you like the idea of being woken naturally be sunlight, consider if this will still be the case at 4AM in the Summer? Look out for a blind or curtain made from black-out fabric, to make sure you can get a decent quality of sleep. Black-out fabric, and ready-made black-out curtains and blinds now come in a wide array of colors and patterns. You can also use black-out fabric as a lining for any curtain.

  • You don't need to go crazy for accessories for your bedroom decorating styles. This is one case where less is more - remember to try and keep your bedroom clutter-free and relaxing - so, not too many nick-nacks.

  • Do fill your bedroom, though, with objects you love - particularly any objects which have a sentimental value for you. What better way to go to sleep and wake up, than surrounded by the things you love and cherish?

  • You don't need to skimp on accessories such as cushions and throws - make your bedroom soft, luxurious and comfortable. Take a quick look at interior design tricks for successfully using texture in your room.

  • Choose good quality lights and lighting for decorating your bedroom. There will probably be times when you want to create a sensual, or romantic, mood in your bedroom. Check out these home lighting ideas for bedrooms, to find out how to create mood lighting in your room, and what else you should consider, for lighting your bedroom decorating styles.

I hope that these tips helped you to decide on your best bedroom decorating styles, to create a practical, restful and beautiful room.
