How to Create a Mood Board

And more importantly - it's great fun!

You can then come up with your very own interior decorating style.

Skip straight to the step-by-step instructions...

I would say that even if you already have a strong idea of the interior design style that you want, it is still worth trying out this step.

The end result will be something unique to you - and will show you interior decorating styles, ideas and combinations that you never knew existed!

I recommend interior design and home style magazines as a very good place to start searching for interior design ideas.

See if friends or family have got back issues of any interior design or home decorating magazines.

Or use your local library for magazines or books with interior decorating and design pictures you could photocopy.

1. Flick through a good collection of the magazines - ripping out pictures you really like or feel drawn towards.
2. Don’t worry if the pictures don’t all seem to be the same interior decorating style or theme.

   For now, just pick the ones you really love.

   You can sort through them and pick out a common theme at a later stage.

3. For more ideas you can use for your mood board, look at the sections on this website:
   • Photo Gallery
   • Styles and themes
   • Hot new trends
4. When you have a good collection of photo cuttings you like, you can start trying to arrange them together.
5. Use an A3 or A4 piece of paper or card - create an attractive collage from your photo inspiration.
6. Choose the ones you like the best - and look to find the ones that seem to look good together.
7. Don’t worry too much about color choices yet - most interior decorating styles can adapt to lots of different colors - and you can fine-tune this later.

   Although strong color choices may already be coming out in your selections - and this is fine too.

   Sometimes the color is the part of the look you like the best. So in this case try to base your mood-board around the color as your main theme.

8. At this stage, if there is a favourite piece of furniture, rug, vase, picture or light fixture I want to keep in the room, I take a photo - and add it into the mix.
9. You can even add in bits of fabric, ribbons or beads - whatever catches your eye...
10. Glue them all down - and there you have it - an attractive collage.

    But also a great visual plan of your own personal interior decorating style!

11. You can use this, and keep it, as a constant reminder of the look you are aiming for....

    As you develop your interior design ideas into a real room, keep checking back to make sure you are getting it right.

You can see there is quite a color theme already come together in this moodboard...

But in this next one (below) you can see I've just concentrated on pictures I liked in a similar style...

And there are lots of colors...

It doesn't really matter which particular bright color you would use for this look...

You can look at the issue of color separately - to suit your own tastes and your own room...

Here we are creating a moodboard just to start getting interior design ideas - and for the overall look, feel, style and mood of the room...

...or wait until you get to the later Sample board stage, when you will search out and collect the actual patterns, designs and materials you'll use in your finished design...
