Create Your Own
Interior Design Ideas
And Get a Room You Love...

interior design ideas

Your own interior design ideas are hand picked for your personality.

So don't just slavishly follow decorating styles in glossy mags - I'll show you how to get creative!

Now you can start thinking about all those interior design ideas and decorating styles that have been whirring around in your head.

Do you already have an interior decorating style in mind? Great, we can work on that - and really make it your own!

Not sure? Or haven’t a clue? Don’t worry - it’s all taken care of here...

How to Create a Mood Board

  • I recommend you create a mood board or ideas board - it’s not essential, but I find it’s a really good way of getting all those interior design ideas and decorating styles together and down on paper. You can then come up with your very own interior decorating style.

  • I would say that even if you already have a strong idea of the interior design style that you want, it is still worth trying out this step. The end result will be something unique to you - and will show you interior decorating styles, ideas and combinations that you never knew existed!

I recommend interior design and home style magazines as a very good place to start searching for interior design ideas.

See if friends or family have got back issues of any interior design or home decorating magazines. Or use your local library for magazines or books on interior decorating and design.

interior design ideas - getting inspiration

  1. Flick through a good collection of the magazines - ripping out pictures you really like or feel drawn towards. (It’s worth saying - but ask first if it’s OK, if you borrowed them. If you are in the library, perhaps you’d better just photocopy the pages - I don’t want you getting in trouble!)

  2. Don’t worry if the pictures don’t all seem to be the same interior decorating style or theme. Just pick the ones you really love.

  3. For more ideas, look at the sections on this website on style and themes, and hot new trends and contemporary interior design ideas

  4. When you have a good collection of cuttings start trying to arrange them together - on an A3 or A4 piece of paper or card - into an attractive collage. Choose the ones you like the best - and the ones that seem to look good together.

  5. Don’t worry too much about color choices yet - most interior decorating styles can adapt to lots of different colors. Although strong color choices may already be coming out in your selections - and this is fine too.

  6. At this stage, if there is a favourite piece of furniture, rug, vase, picture or light fixture I want to keep in the room, I take a photo - and add it into the mix.

  7. Glue them all down - and there you have it - an attractive collage. But also a great visual plan of your own personal interior decorating style!

Next, consider the decorating color schemes you would like to use, and the proportions of your room...

Now would be a good time to check out the sections on decorating with color, layout and arranging furniture and interior decorating information on room proportion. It is a good idea to start your project with a really thorough understanding of decorating color schemes, arranging your furniture, and how you can change the proportions of a small space or odd shaped room, through color and interior design tricks.
