Organizing Clutter Room by Room

Room by room guide to organizing clutter...

...easy hints and tips for getting rid of clutter all around the home.

How to organize your home and maintain it clutter free...

Do you have trouble knowing how to organize your clutter to keep a clutter free home?

Unless you are naturally tidy, with a minimalist mind (not me!) this can seem really tough and hard work.

The harder it seems, the less organizing and getting rid of clutter we do! ...the more it builds up, and the worse it seems!

Don't let it get out of hand - a massive clutter clearing session can be very therapeutic, as well as helping get rid of clutter.

Once you have cleared as much as possible, some careful thought about how to organize your clutter in future will make it much easier to keep and maintain your clutter free home...

...hopefully giving you a much more relaxed and stress free way of living, as well as a tidy home!

More tips for getting rid of clutter, and how to think about organization

organizing clutter room by room - how to get rid of annoying clutter build up!

These tips for organizing clutter will take you through some ideas for what you can use in each room of your house to help keep control of, and stop clutter building up...

Living Room Clutter

Some ideas for how to organize clutter in the lounge or living room...

  • Think about what you really need to keep in the living room - and do regular de-clutter audits on:
    • magazines
    • books
    • DVD's
    • games
  • Invest in some extra storage:
    • tall shelving units
    • side boards
    • coffee table with extra drawers and storage
    • sofa consoles, or sofa bench storage
    • large baskets, for fast stashing of current magzines
  • Think about display cabinets and glass fronted storage for neat and tidy display of your nick-nacks
  • Arrange books neatly on shelves - arranging by size, and color co-ordinating spines can look much neater

  • organizing clutter - books can look messy so store neatly on bookcases for clutter free presentation

  • Keep mantels, tables and other flat surfaces clear - check daily, weekly or monthly for clutter building up.

Hallway Clutter

The hallway is usually the first part of the house that you and your visitors see - so it is worthwhile organizing clutter in your hallway - as first impressions really do count!

Unfortunately, it is also one of the areas where clutter builds up the most, with all the detritus of everyday life...

  • coats
  • hats, gloves, scarves
  • dog leads
  • boots and shoes
  • bills and junk mail

This is one area where you are really going to have to keep on top of organizing clutter, to stop it building up.

  • Slimline storage and use of wall-space is important in the hallway, which is often a small space.

  • organizing clutter room by room - hallways need to make a good first impression

  • Fit pegs for coats - 2 levels will fit more in! Or try a shelf above. Out of season coats can be stored out of the way in wardrobes upstairs.
  • Hide messy shoes with slimline (wall) cabinets
  • A console table is a good place to file mail - get some letter racks or boxes, and set up a system.
  • Don't forget a hook for keys.
  • A memo board is a nice idea for last minute reminders.

Kitchen Clutter

The kitchen can be a real clutter-store, as we spend so much time there, and there is so much equipment involved - a real challenge for organizing clutter!

  • Keep worksurfaces clear for ease of working.
  • Use you wall-space instead:
    • shelves
    • pegs
    • rails
    • magnetic strips
  • Clear out excess clutter in cupboards and drawers:
    • Crockery
    • Food
    • Cleaning Equipment
  • Look out for:
    • special drawer divides
    • swing out cupboard organizers
    • step shelves for within cupboards
    • special sauce-pan stackers
    • plate racks
    • knife blocks
    • cake tins
  • Fit hooks to the backs of doors, and inside cupboards
  • Invest in special containers or bins to keep recycling nice and organized.
  • Make the most of small wasted space at the end of runs of cupboards, to store things like:
    • wine bottles
    • plastic bags

Bathroom Clutter

With all those wonderful smelling and pretty toiletries that you want on display - and those embarrassing lotions and potions you'd rather keep hidden (!) it's not surprising that clutter builds up quickly in the bathroom...

Tips for organizing clutter in the bathroom...

  • Washstands and vanity units with doors allow you to keep clutter hidden.

  • slimline wall storage with doors is a good choice for organizing clutter in the bathroom

  • Bathroom cabinets are slimline, for your toiletries, and often come with mirrored doors, to add to the feeling of space.
  • Slimline tallboys use vertical space well, and can accommodate more bulky items, like towels.
  • Fit shelving over toilets, or behind your bath, in otherwise wasted space.
  • A sliding bath panel can provide extra storage for cleaning products.
  • Hooks behind doors can take towels or dressing gowns, or how about hanging a laundry bag there?
  • Fitted furniture can be custom built to suit your space, and make the most of every spare inch.
  • Wire baskets and racks can keep soap and shampoo close at hand, and can be attached direct to tiles.
  • Look out for clever (and sometimes fun!) toilet roll storage ideas.
  • A heated towel rail can replace a radiator to save space - look out for the newer vertical designs.

Bedroom Clutter

Whether your master bedroom or guest room, your bedroom needs to be clutter-free and serene to make sure you relax and get a good night's sleep.

  • Have a thorough clear-out of clothes before you start.
  • Fitted wardrobes can be custom built to suit your available space, and make the most of every inch.

  • organizing clutter in the bedroom - organize wardrobes to suit your needs

  • Look at internal fittings inside your wardrobes and cupboards - shelves, hooks, or internal dividers may suit your storage needs better than the traditional rail and hangers.
  • Proper shoe storage shelves, cabinets or boxes can help keep the bottom of the wardrobe clear.
  • Underbed storage boxes, or drawers, are excellent for organizing cluuter - very handy for bed linen, shoes, or woolly jumpers out of season.
  • Bedside tables or cabinets keep your essentials tidy and close to hand.
  • Use hooks on walls, or the back of doors, to tidy:
    • necklaces and other jewellery
    • scarves
    • ties

Home Office Clutter

This can be a real haven for clutter, as paperwork builds up, but organizing clutter can be simple if you get into a filing routine, and have a well-thought out storage system.

  • Invest in shelves with ample space - for a neat, tidy look, look at options for organizing clutter such as:
    • storage boxes and baskets
    • magazine files
    • box files
    • letter racks
    • memo boards
    • trolleys on wheels
    • in and out trays
  • Go to paperless statements from banks, and don't print out unnecessary documents you already have online, or on email.
  • Label boxes and files clearly.
  • Investing in pretty and stylish, rather than purely practical, accessories for an attractive look - which will encourage you to keep it tidy!

Hope you will soon clear the clutter, and be enjoying a clutter free home.
